I have a Victor mandolin that a friend gave me that I would like to know more about. I have been told by a luthier that it is perhaps between 80 - 100 years old. I really don't know much about this mandolin - I had it restored and repaired, sounds great considering how damaged it was. Any help would be appreciated.

Mugwumps lists the brand as:

Victor - George C. Dobson brandname from 1884

I've also seen mandolins from the 30's made by the Chicago companies (Harmony, Regal, etc.) with the Victor label, possibly distributed by the same folks that sold records under the same name. If you post a picture you'll have a better chance of getting some information.

Here is a link to Nashville Fretworks that did the work on my Victor mandolin - no sure how to post a picture. There are several pictures of the mandolin in various stages of restoration. Thanks for your help

That's a Regal made for Southern California Music, we have another thread about one these here somewhere.

Yup, here (http://www.mandolincafe.com/forum/showthread.php?46649-Victor-Mandolin-S.C.M.-Co.&highlight=victor).

These are available with many brand names on a regular basis on eBay.

Thanks - it does say SCM company on the inside lable , I thought that's what it stood for - Southern California Music Company. I contaced SCM Company but it has changed hands several times over the last 100 plus years, the new owner had no real idea about the origins of this instrument. The folks who gave us the mandolin live in Southern California and it was shipped to me here in TN. Fretworks did a suburb job. Thanks again for your help. Any idea of the value?

They did a nice job on the restoration. I love to see antique instruments get a new lease on life.

Lazarus would be a good name for it.

The value in any condition is no more than about $200.00 on a good day. They weren't high end mandolins.
