This (http://www.elderly.com/vintage/items/80U-2307.htm) could work as an Octave Mando, I bet.

Could, perhaps, but the scale's 26 3/8 inches, which is hefty for an OM. Plectrum instruments were designed to be tuned like 5-string, C-tuning banjos, without the 5th string -- sort of a transition from the original 5-string banjo to the tenor banjo, since they were played with a pick ("plectrum") like tenors, but tuned like 5-strings. You can still get plectrum banjos, but the plectrum guitar never caught on, really, and they're pretty rare. I've never seen a Gibson plectrum guitar "in person."

You could try Eddie Freeman's tuning (reentrant CgDa) for a chunky rhythm sound that still uses fifths fingerings.
