I've given up the chance to buy a couple of used A-9's because I can't make up my mind whether to take chance on a used one or stop in First Quality and pay $250 more for a new one. I just like the idea of hand picking my own from the 3 or four they ussually have in stock .... but is it really worth the $?? How about some of those "EXPERT OPINIONS" out there passsing on some wisdom ....

I would kick down the extra $250 with confidence that I have a life time warranty.

But first be sure they are an authorized Gibson retail store otherwise the warranty is worthless.

I'm with wsm on this one. I have never bought a new mandolin in my life, but the last time I bought a guitar, I bought a new Martin. Elderly's prices were great, they helped me with the selection, the guitar is wonderful and it has the lifetime warrantee.

For mandolins, I have never thought I had enough money to go new (at least with what I want). So, I have ended up with a Flatiron (new was not an option when I got it) and Stiver (bought at auction for much less than going price).

The new mandolins that I would consider are that A-model Collings (whatever the one with the satin finish is called) and the Gibson A-9.

Good luck.

Unless you have the experience to be able to play a used A-9 and tell if it is great, average, or poor example of that model, I would consider the opportunity to compare 3 A-9's side-by-side a great advantage. Along with the warranty issue, it would be worth another $250.

I'd go with which ever you like best. Not to many things go wrong with used mandos. They've been played and tested. I would not hesitate to buy a used Gibson. Even though the warranty is for the original owner, Charlie and Joe are very visible people and they will not have an unhappy Gibson owner. -especially if it was due to a defect.
