As a new player I was wondering when you need to change the strings. I'm playing an older Japanese Kentucky & while the strings still stay in tune well I don;t know when it is necessary to change them. THANKS for any help!!

This has been discussed thoroughly on the board and there is no firm consensus. Averages seem to run anywhere from two weeks to six months, with a month or two being common. It varies widely with your personal preferences, what kind of strings you use, how much you play and even the amount and chemistry of your perspiration. Signs you may need to change:
> Strings sound dead
> Hard to keep in tune
> Strings show visible wear
> Intonation seems off

I add,to >3rd point>, windings on Ds get flattened by fretting and show it from the opposite, top, side. or, you run out of spare Es.

..when they sound chitty, feel chitty, note chitty and look chitty.....now keep in mind you dont have to have all these chitty's in order for it to be time to change strings...just use some common sense and you be the judge.

when you see seeds germinating from between the G-string winds.
