I noticed that LMI sells two different scale length's for mandolin, 13.75 and 13.875, besides the difference of about 1/8" are other difference's?
Are most builders using the longer scale? And if so would the shorter scale be be more appropiate on non-F-5 model mandolins?
About the only thing I can think of, would be that the slightly longer string length would create a higher string tension, what effect on sound that would have I dont Know. :whistling:

You're right—longer strings at the same pitch have higher tension and a bit brighter sound, but the difference between 13.75 and 13.875 is an eighth of an inch, which in the bigger scheme of things, is insignificant.

But what makes the shorter scale board handy for some folks doing restorations is that a replacement board can be installed that will allow an instrument to intonate better. Many old Gibsons (and some not so old) had the 13.875 board and left the factory with the bridge planted in fresh lacquer too close to the neck for proper intonation. People move the bridge back and reveal a big scar where the bridge was but shouldn't have been. Putting a slightly shorter scale board on there enables you to put the bridge back in the good place.

There are other reasons for such minor variations, but this is one that means something to me.

Thanks Paul, that makes sense.
