Sat in the front row at a small venue Saturday night to hear Missy Raines and the New Hip play 2 1/2hrs of great music. They played a lot off their new CD Inside Out(no financial interest). Missy had four great young players with her including a mandolin player, Dominic Leslie, who was making his Gilchrist really do some great stuff. Does anyone know much about him? He's new to me but he's got a great future ahead. It was probably the only tme I'll every get within a few feet of a Gilchrist, too.

Dominick is from here in Colorado, I've had the pleasure of listening to him play quite a few times around here, most recently at the Mike Compton workshop when he dropped in for the jam at the end. He must have been home from Berklee on holiday break at that time. He's a great musician all right!

He's got a website: http://www.dominickleslie.com/

I remember him from the first Symposium back in 2004.

He has given some VERY memorable contest performances at Winfield. He does not usually play what the judges are wanting to hear, but the boy packs more emotion into a tune than the winners ever tried to. I think he could win it on technique, speed and perfection. That's what the judges are listening for. He plays the game on his own terms, and it has cost him the championship at least once in my opinion. Several mando nuts keep score down front at the contest. He was on the top of my list in '08. Too melodic, too emotional, not enough pyrotechnics and flash. Rave on, kid!

Complaints that are selling points to me.

Dominic Leslie was one of the Rockygrass wunderkids who was competing in the Rockygrass Fest mandolin Contest at 10 yrs old. At 10 he was better than the 99% of all Academy Mandolin attendees and nearly as good as the contest winners in the early years. I watched him grow up over time - though I didn't attend Rgrass every year.

Now he's like 6'1 and a tall drink of water - with serious chops.
He was a childhood pickin' pal of Sarah Jaroz and Sam Grisman and played a lot with these next gen masters of Bluegrass.

Kid frikkin' rips it up...
