View Full Version : Scott Napier getting all "Goofus"
I got to see Scott Napier play with the Lost and Found band Saturday and all I can say is wow. He's got the Dempsey Young sound down pat while also having his own unique style. The interaction between him and Ronald Smith (Lost and Found's superb banjo player) is great.
He's also one of the nicest guy's you'll ever meet and was a pleasure to be around. If you have a chance to catch him on the Lost and Found's current west coast tour do yourself a favor and go.
Here's a little backstage video of Scott (on my Kneeland) and Ron playing "Goofus".

Nice video, with excellent playing! I played Goofus at a jam at the Joe Val Festival a little more than a week ago, with 2 mandos, a fiddle, guitar and bass. It's a great tune that lies well on mando...

Goofus lyrics from singer / comedian Phil Harris:
I was born on a farm out in Ioway
A flaming youth
Who was bound that he'd fly away
I packed my grip
And I grabbed my saxophone
Can't read notes but I play anything by ear
I made up tunes on the sounds that I used to hear
I'd start to play, folks used to say
Sounds a little goofus to me
Corn-fed chords appeal to me
I like rustic harmony
Hold the note 'n change the key
That's called goofus
Not accordin' to the rules
That you learn at music schools
But the folks just dance like fools
They love goofus
Got a job but I just couldn't keep it long
The leader said I played all the music wrong
So I stepped out with an outfit of my own
Got together a new kind of orchestry
And we all played just the same goofus harmony
And I must admit, we made a hit
Goofus has been lucky for me
I must admit, we made a hit
Goofus has been lucky for me
Shocking, just shocking! (to quote Maj. Charles Emerson Winchester III).
Dempsey would be proud. Was Ronald picking the banjer off camera?
Oh, and that mandolin is scrump-dilly-ishus.
Yes Ronald was over my left shoulder but I couldn't take my eyes or camera off of Scott ;)
