I was at our local Irish session on Sunday night. There is an amazing mandolin player who comes every wek and knows all the tunes. She had a '24 blacktop A2z with her this time, on loan from a friend. All of us passd it around. What a great mando! It was loud, sweet and ultra responsive. I have to admit, when I had it in my hands, I started the longest set of slip-jigs I know, just to play the thing a little longer. MAS.......? Oh yeah. I have a Weber Gallatian "A-oval" that is beautiful....now if I can just hang around 90 years or so......

I'll ask the compulsory question for whenever a blackface A2Z is mentioned: Is there actually a Z on the label?

Hmmmm, I don't know. I will check next week. (It will give me an excuse to maybe play a few more jigs :)

Completely different animal compared to the old Gibsons.

a true A2z is a joy to play and listen too. Thats why they are so sought after and costly.
Just about any snakehead can sound killer. I've played some dud "zs" too.
And yeah- so far we've never seen a blackface with "a2z" on the label. The model number and "Being a good snakehead" are often lumped together..

Do A2Z's have gnerally have a narrower neck than those Gibson oval holes with the usual wider neck (1 3/16th?)? Or do just some?
Thanks in advance. . . .
Snakeheads have 1" nuts vs 1 1/4" from the earlier ones

I recently tried a Loar era (1923) regular A (not A4 not A2Z)for sale at Fiddlers Green. First snakehead I have ever played, loved it.
