Hi, I've heard discussion of and reference to JS74 strings. Who makes them and where are they available?

Look at the thread, they are made by D'Addario Strings and available through Juststrings.com (one of the site sponsor) http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

J-74's are phosphor bronze and JS-74's are stainless steel.

What's the differnce in sound? Not sure I've ever used Stainless steel.
I heard rumors that stainless steel wound strings could increase the rate of fret wear.

Steel is a harder metal than bronze, so it would make sense.
Stainless steel has a high content of nickle which gives it a toughness that allows it to handle high torque without breaking. stainless steel is also softer than other alloys of steel. Nickle is what gives it its corrosion properties .
Bronze is an alloy of copper and iron.
Sorry if I bored you , too many years in machine shops .

I was wondering if you guys might be able to help me with something. #I was at this past Merlefest and I noticed that Mike Marshall and a few others had some sort of cage over the backs of their mandolins. #I know that the purpose of this is to allow the back to vibrate more freely but the only thing that I'm not sure about is where to find one. #I'm hoping that someone here may have some insight. #Thanks.

Okay... the phos-bronze are usually made for acoustic instrument and the nickel or steel for electric guitars. There are monel strings which look like electric guitar strings. Tonewise through the piezo, what would be the difference? I know you need nickel for magnetic pickups? What would the viberating difference be PB and nickel if any? Or would it make no difference tonewise other than one feels softer on the fingers??
