I might buy me a wegen pick, what thickness would everyone recommend? The m-100 or the m-150? There aren't any stores near were I live that sells these picks so I cant try any out.

I tried the 150's and thought they sounded real good but found I like a bit bigger pick. I've got some TF 140's now that I like alot. I go back and forth between the 140 and a Blue Chip 60----depends on the mood I'm in.~:>

I use 3 different sizes, 100, 150 and a .73 mm that Michel Wegen made as a special order (same price). I wanted one with a similar width as Fender Medium pick so we estimated it to be .73mm and he made 3 of them for me. Just email him and he will do a custom order. I actually use the 150 the most...

Which size would be about the same size as the golden gate pick?

Was looking at getting TF-140s. What is the biggest difference you see between this and the BlueChip? Any huge diffs in grip, tone, feel, speed, etc.?

My pick of choice has been a Wegen MF150. In a recent workshop by Mike Compton he suggested holding the pick differently, which requires a larger pick. I contacted Michel Wegen, and he recommended a custom pick he has in stock, the BN150 w/holes. Same thickness and bevels of the MF150. Perfect size and same great tone! Just a bit larger than a Golden Gate or Dawg, and with more pointed corners. I can't imagine finding a pick I'd like better, and Michel is super helpful.

They're pretty much identical in shape and size. I actually like the grip I get on the Wegan a bit better than the BC (from all I've read, I'm probably an oddball as far as that's concerned but I have trouble keeping my pick where I want it no matter what I use).
Tone is a bit brighter with the Wegan. I'm not enough of a picker to comment much on speed but the BC seems a bit smoother/faster off the strings------that's just my take on it.~:>

does anyone know what pick would be the closest to the golden gate?

The M150.

M150 is almost identical size shape and thickness, but beveled.

I love the M-250.... don't let its massive thickness fool you. The beveled edges slide off the strings like greased lightning. I like thicker picks. My default is usually a Dunlop 207, but the Wegen M-250 adds a certain brilliance to the tone that I just love. Very ergonomic too. Don't lose it though, they cost $25 bucks or so.

I have measured some golden gates and dawg picks and I have found inconsistency of anywhere from 1.5 to 1.6. There also is inconsistency on the wegens. Out of 3 m150 that i purchased 1 measures 1.5 and 2 measure about 1.42 So take your pick(pun intended) . This might make it more confusing for you.

I prefer the TF-100 which is now my standard pick.

Get them in white, if you can... with festival season coming up (just around the corner), the black Wegens are just too hard to find if you drop them by a campfire. Of course, the black Wegens give a darker sound...

FYI: The material Michel uses for all picks is exactly the same. Hence no difference in tone, whether black or white. Only the dimensions will change the tone slightly, as in any plectrum. Thcker the pick, mellower the tone...if even slightly so.

They may be the same material, but they definitely sound different. The black ones sound darker to me too.

Only way to know for sure is to conduct a blindfold test with many trials!

I use M100s in white. However, think the last time I ordered I asked for a custom made M125. It's been so long that I've forgotten. I've been using the same Wegen picks for a couple of years. They are the absolute best I've ever used, although I haven't tried a real tortoise shell or Blue Chip.

Yes. I use the TF 140 Wegen, and the TAD60 Blue Chip.

They both add a lot of "body" and creamyness to the tone of my mandolins. The Blue Chip is a little bit mellower. I like the tone a little better. But the Wegen is a bit punchyer - great for big jams and playing in a loud room, where you need to break through, and the slight sacrifice in tone isn't noticed.

I use the Blue Chip when playing alone or with a few friends.

Both picks have great grip, and are pretty slick when playing fast fiddle tunes or tremolo.

On my Weber mandolin (Aspen II) the Wegen sounds a little better than the Blue Chip, the opposite on my Gibson (A2). I might even generalize that to flat top / arch top mandolins, at least in my experience.

But I use both, on both mandolins, dependign on the venue and the noise level.

I don't believe in one ultimate pick, any more than I believe in one mandolin.
