Here's a link to the website of our resident Vega expert, BobD:

From what I understand, it's hard to date them precisely.

Actually, I've revised my opinion and now think that the Fairbanks/Vega bnajo serial number sequence -- even though it precedes the first Vega cylinder-back by decades -- actually works for the mandolins. This is based on serial numbers on instruments with pretty well known manufacture dates consistently falling into the "right" range of the banjo numbers. If you give me the serial number, I'll give you what I believe to be the date, based on the banjo number list compiled by Jim Bollman and published in Pickin' in 1978.

I'll get the number next time I see the guy. It plays great and had a nice sound.

Hi Bob,
In case you check back on this thread (and not to hi-jack straight-a's thread) but can you put a date on my Vega Style 4 sn# 28952 bowlback?
Thanks,
Gary

I have a list of Vega instruments compiled by Paul Ruppa of the Milwaukee mandolin orchestra. They have many Vegas in the group. The closest serial number to Gary's would put it around 1912-13.
straight-a: the main problem with these is warpage of the top. if the one you are looking to buy has a dcent top and the price is right, go for it. They are wonderful instruments. My first non-bowlback mandolin was a cylinder back and I had to sell it in order to afford my first Gibson. I still wish I had it.

Thanks to both Jim and Bob (Jim - I don't remember ever giving you the serial number off mine in any of our earlier discussions).

This one has just been repaired due to the top sinking on one side.
