Three parts. I've also heard old time fiddlers play it with four parts rarely.

If we're speaking of the same song I'm only aware
of two parts. A low part that I play using mostly a
pentatonic scale (a-c-d-e-g) and a high part
mostly in the
mixolydian mode. I believe that's pretty close
to the way Monroe played it but I don't really
remember his version.

If there are more elaborate versions on record please
let me know.

Monroe's version, with mandolin lead and Richard Greene on fiddle, appeared on the Blue Grass Time album. #On that recording, Monroe only played two parts; on many live shows, he would play three parts. Here is a live version of Monroe playing Dusty Miller (http://world.std.com/~ereilly/dustymiller.mp3), with Kenny Baker on the fiddle.

Thanks Evan! I hadn't ever heard Monroe play it in three parts. That version is fairly similar to the third version in the Fiddler's Fakebook, and the version played by Andrew Collins and Marc Roy. Interesting that the Bluegrass Mandolin Extravaganza version is only in two parts.

Excellent tune.

Tim O'Brien's excellent version on The Crossing is also a two parter. Interesting the variations on this great tune!
