Is there a system to ID the year of mandolins of the Loar era? I am somewhat familiar with the newer system but don`t see anything close to that in the older mandolins.... Did the numbers just run in sequence as they were made no matter if it was an F-5 or some other model?....Willie

Take a look at this page on the Vintage Guitars website. (http://home.provide.net/~cfh/gibson.html#serial) It's got as much detailed information on Gibson's weird-slash-irrational numbering system as I've ever found. There weren't separate serial number series for different instrument models.
