Has any of you ever used a drum machine for practice? And tell me what you think.

A metronome is more practical for me. It's cheaper than hiring a full time bass player.

Drum machines are great. Some of the newer tuners ahve metronome/rhythm machines built in.
Sometimes I use a karaoke set up to play with a whole band. Good exercise picking out melodies as the words appear, and following along with the instrumental breaks. Use headphones to really listen closely.
Works Great.
Drum Machine = Glorified metronome.
