View Full Version : Mike #Compton/ David Long Workshop?

There is a possibility of having David and Mike do a workshop while in Philly on October 1st. They would #need at least 10, so let's hear it if you are interested. It could be Friday afternoon, or early evening since the show does not start until 10pm. Possibly 5-7 or 6-8 pm. Either post or e-mail me and I will start a list. We are currently looking for a place to hold it also.
Well, can't blame 'em for wanting 10, there were only 4 in the Madison, WI one, and that isn't much money for what they're offering. If anyone wants to learn something, or just soak up some mojo, go to the workshop. It was worth every penney.

I'd be interested. It would surely be worth the short drive from Delaware.

One idea for a location: call Acoustic Roots at Medley Music right down the hill from The Point in Bryn Mawr. They have that room upstairs filled with guitars (and a couple mandolins last time I was there, F5G, F9, some others). The guy who runs Acoustic Roots is a great guitar player. Maybe they'd be interested in hosting it.

I heard that the show starts at 10pm.
why so late?
Is there spot somewhere in The Point where they could hold the workshop?

I think that is the normal time for the point. I am not sure about whether they would have a spot for a workshop, but right now there are only 3 of us.

I stopped by the Point today to get a ticket for the show. They do not offer advance tickets for this show but they did suggest a reservation for $10.00 that would be used as a voucher for coffee and desert (they don't sell booze). Admission is $10.00. It looks like a great space to hear them, I'm looking forward to it. There is an act booked earlier that is why they are starting at 10:00. I think the suggestion for Medley Music/Acoustic Roots makes sense. I believe they have sponsored similar events like the workshop in the past. Eric I hope you can make the show if not the workshop. I have a party to attend with my wife earlier thus I will be attending the show only. I just need to remember to skip desert at the party!

The Point is a great venue. It's BYOB if you're of that mood that evening (mandolins and cold beer? Who'd think of that?). I hear Medley turned 'em down for the workshop (!) and that the workshop (if enough sign up) will be at Vintage Instruments in Philly, which may help attendance overall at the workshop if not the show itself. Get the word out!

Jim,
I have a conference in NYC on Sat & Sunday. I was planning on driving up Friday night.... But after hearing about this concert...Tough decision!!!
Eric
im into it...... im kinda glad its not at medley/acoustic. that place rubs me wrong thirteen kinds of ways.
by the way, the point is kinda far from philly just in case anyone had some misconception. well kinda sorta short drive, depending on your idea of short drive. its like a half hour for me at least
oh yeah.. id say we could do it at my house but in my previous post.... im not a block away from the venue.

All,
Fred Oster has agreed to host the workshop if we can get at least 10 attendees pre paid. #It will be from 6-8 PM at Vintage Instruments (http://vintage-intruments.com). #As for our late start at the Point, they have an early show with a singer-songwriter I think. #Sorry if it's too late for some folks. Let me know if you all have any questions.

Are there any more than:

Gary
Kevin
John
and what will the cost be?

We need more people. I am going to try to contact folks at the Chester County Old Fiddler's Picnic this weekend if I can get out there. (Heck I might even make up some kind of flyer if I can get time).

Back to 4. C'mon Philly area players, don't be shy -let's make this happen.
I would love to make it if it happens but I can't be the deciding factor right now.

Tom,
What ever works easiest for you. I'd rather you mail the check to VI, but then again, I'd never pass up $50 in NYC. That'll cover our parking for at least a half hour. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Great. I'm committed to going. David, you will not have any problems parking on the street right in front or next to the place.
The place looks like a dive and can be hard to spot as I believe the sign just says "Lounge". You may pass it 2 or 3 times before you realize it's the place. There is a nice back room for performances.

Re: the show in Bryn Mawr near Philly last night - run, don't walk to nearest Mike Compton/David Long show and workshop near you. Among other things, they emphasize bluesy roots of bluegrass. Big Joe Williams, Charlie and Joe McCoy, other more obscure blues numbers played in a driving two mandolin format (although Mike also played a great rhythm guitar and - I think - a mandola as accompaniment). The evening literally flew by as they ran through a diverse selection of tunes, some trademark numbers for each (Bluegrass Romp, Pretty Red Lips, Evening Prayer Blues....), others rural/delta inflected old time mandolin blues, all played in the elusive and compelling style which obviously plays homage to Bill Monroe but which, I think it's a fair to say, also reflects Compton's and Long's substantial contributions to and refinement of that style. Great harmonies, with Mike a soulful baritone and David "doing a little tenor." Other fiddle tunes, mandolin instrumentals - a fantastic set (where's the album guys - I'd buy it). The workshop is a rare chance to sit down with David and Mike and walk away with a "tool kit" and a "mind frame" more than anything on how to approach this style of music - it was a privilege just to soak in the mojo. Worst mistake I made was to ask David how he likes his Gilchrist, which he promptly handed to me to try out. Word of advice: if you're driving a Chevrolet, don't test drive a Rolls. Another treat last night was to hear Bryce Milano, a 12 year old prodigy in the Chris Thile mold, who joined David and Mike on run through Jerusalem Ridge as the encore. We'll be hearing more from Bryce down the line. I was pleased to meet and greet some fellow listers there as well. Go see this show.
