i play mando in a hardcore band, and i get this problem when i move around. the back of the body hits my stomach and feeds into my K&K dual pickups, creating a not-so-hot "THUMP!". my question: is there any device that will "muffle" this sound or elminate it all together? DIY job suggestions are welcomed too.

Toneguard, anyone? # It should provide enough of a physical barrier to eliminate the body noise you describe. #Or, for a do-it-yourself project, just drive a half dozen or so nails in the back of your mandolin, leaving an inch or so sticking out, for a home-made toneguard. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

That would probably work if it's a solid body mandolin, but if we're talking about an acoustic, I think you might need to use molly bolts.

You will need to find the note or frequency that is the culprit. I suspect it's a lower frequency, probably in the 125 to 300 HZ range. If you have a 1/3 octave EQ you could run the mandolin through or a Baggs Parametric EQ, I think you could find the zone real quick and tune it out. You will loose some of your low end when you do this, but it will help to eliminate some if not all of your thumping problem. Good Luck! Kenc

You might also try to find a preamp with a "notch" filter. I have one on my guitar preamp, and I can mute the thump with it, to some degree. It's a filter that attenuates a very narrow frequency range, which you can adjust. It's also very useful for eliminating feedback.

decided that a tone gard was a better idea then electric stuff. playing hardcore, i cant afford to lose any bottom end.

is there anywhere that sells then gard, (or a knock off) for less then 65 bones?

No. I sell them and so does Tony Pires, the guy who makes them. Occasionally you'll see one used, but they are few and far as used items. Kenc

How about a piece of upholstery foam an inch or so thick cut in the shape of your mandolin and attached to the back with rubber bands or something similar so that it could easily be removed.
Since you are amplified, your main goal is to eliminate the thumping when you bump the back of the body. 2 or 3 bucks for materials and ten minutes to cut and attach it; it should do the trick and if it doesn't, you're not out any more than a stop by the golden arches for a case of indigestion.

IMHO you should pop for the ToneGard, you'll dig it & it will probably solve your problem as well as make your mando sound better acoustically too. I have one on each mando, I'm a believer!

How well does the tonegard fit in a Carlton Case??

Like a glove. At first mine might occassionally come off & remain in the case when I pulled the mando out, but seems the Calton adjusted & now the mando pops out ToneGarded every time.

Go on a high carb diet.

The way I see it, it's a win/win proposition: the extra padding around your middle might help to muffle the thump a bit; failing that, you still get to consume all of the pizza and beer you want.

thanks for the help, going to pick up some egg roll padding and try that method out.

Why not staple the mandolin to your stomach? http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Why did the chicken cross the road?

He was stapled to Sid.
