This is one of the rarest versions of a Gibson mandolin from the Loar era. This is an example of the very scarce yellow top F-5Z.

perhaps I may have overstated the rarity of this item a bit...however i doubt that yours is a Fern of this quality..Dan...
If you look closely at the label on this item here you can clearly see that it is
..quite obscure...
perhaps if you were to provide some photos we may compare the two..I have requested some additional photos of this item from the seller and we will see who's got what.
$405.00 and climbing....

"I do not guarantee that this is not a true Gibson Mandolin. It could be a copy I am just not 100% sure. I know that it is a beautiful instrument and sounds wonderful!!! That is what I can guarantee you!!"
Nah, I'll just hold out for one that is guaranteed not to be a true Gibson Mandolin... :)

I can't seem to make out the serial number from the label . . . anybody?

I emailed the seller last night and suggested he remove the listing for the usual reasons. Today I got this response from him:
"first off it says gibson on the headstock, second the label on the inside of the body is a gibson label with f5, serial numbers and so on. I am not sure what your getting at dude, but I put every thing that is on the mandolin on the listing with pictures so what are you calling a fraud"
I noticed that he has since added a sort of disclamer - I do not see my question or the above response in his ad!

Wow, here's another brand mandolin (Speranski) with the same headstock inlay. It's listed on Ebay as being hand made in Australia! I can't help but believe they both came out of the same off shore maker.

His disclaimer:

Note the double negative. Does this mean he guarantees that it is a true Gibson? I wonder how he guarantees that it sounds wonderful... unless by wonderful he means you'll wonder where all the tone went. I've seen that inlay on a bunch of cheap imports, flat scroll f styles - Johnsons, I'm pretty sure. I guarantee you it sounds pathetic.
Yep, Johnson (http://cgi.ebay.com/JOHNSON-F-STYLE-MANDOLIN-WITH-HARD-CASE-NEW-Savannah_W0QQitemZ330392769738QQcmdZViewItemQQptZL H_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item4cecf194ca)

Mike,
I couldn't stand it anymore and sent a complaint to the powers that be at ebay. The complaint had to do with copyright infringement.
Looks like that did the trick.
