Hey all.
I am new to bluegrass. I like Grisman/Garcia and recently fell in love with Trampled By Turtles. In rock, I like Phish and the String Cheese Incident. I would love some recommendations of bluegrass bands (like TBT). More of a jam sound (less high lonesome vocals).
Thanks!
Yonder Mountain String Band, for jam I recomend Mountain tracks volume 5

Definately Yonder - and Mt. Tracks Vol 5 is the top of my list, too.
I've branched out into solo acts from jam bands. Drew Emmit is doing some killer stuff.
Of course, anything by Sam Bush will tickle your fancy I'm sure.

There's tons of jamgrass and tweaked bluegrass out there out there: as mentioned, Yonder Mountain, Sam Bush, and Drew Emmitt (also see Leftover Salmon and Emmitt-Nershi Band), Hot Buttered Rum String Band, Railroad Earth, The Waybacks, Newgrass Revival, Bela Fleck, Cadillac Sky, Punch Brothers (and other Chris Thile work), Mike Marshall, etc, etc I'm forgetting plenty

Manzanita by Tony Rice
Strength in Numbers-The Telluride Sessions (Sam Bush, Bela Fleck, Mark O'Conner, Edgar Meyer)
Hop, Skip & Wobble by Douglas, Barenberg, and Meyer

Keller Williams and SCI - Breathe
Rex (also a Keller Williams collaboration) - Grateful Grass
Greensky Bluegrass - All of their albums are great but I'd start with their newest 5 Interstates
Old School Freight Train - All of their albums are great but I personally like Live in Ashland

Bob.
Big thumbs up for Hot Buttered Rum string band
'Well Oiled Machine' and 'Live in the Northeast' are both great albums. LITN features cameos by Mike Marshall and Chris Thile too.
Big thumbs up for Hot Buttered Rum string band.
Agreed. Very conscious guys, and they've recently added Matt Butler (from Jambay and Everyone Orchestra) on drums, so they're heading into jammier territory. Here's a link to the show they played on Jerry's birthday last year:

By the way, thanks to folks for the tips on Greensky Bluegrass and Trampled by Turtles. Lovin' them both!

You can always go back to what many people consider (myself included) the beginning of New Grass/jamgrass with John Hartford's Aero-Plain album...

jamfan- we have very similar taste in music, I got into SCI and Phish years ago (my signature is a line from SCI's "Good times around the bend"). Eliot's post mentions most of my favs, but I'm going to add 3. No mandos in any of them, but great nonetheless. First, check out Cornmeal (out of Chicago). Next, Crooked Still- bass, banjo & cello (basically taking over the fiddle's part- listen to Tristan's solo on "Orphan Girl", the Gilian Welch tune). Now for my favorite next to Yonder- OLD CROW MEDICINE SHOW!!!!! They get down and dirty, and their shows are pretty rowdy. Saw 'em in Fayetteville, AR last September, can't wait to do it again.
