I played it. It was ok, but there are MM's in the classifieds for less money. I think there would be little difference between most of these once they are broken in.
By that, I should clarify that I mean they would ALL sound great. I also played a '23 Loar at the same festival, and I think that Gibson's high end mandos are comparing quite favorably to the standard of old.

All of the master models are great. I think the ones made in the last year are better, but that comes with consistency in building. They are all great instruments and the used market is quite a bit below its real value at the minute. You are not likely to be sorry for buying one now. Of course, this is just my opinion.

I have a May 27,2004 and it is amazing to me how good it sounds and plays for a new instrument. I have played and owned a number of mandolins over the years, including Gibson,Paganoni, and Gilchrist, and I am very pleased with my Master Model-not to mention the great service I have always received from all the fine folks at Gibson.

That has still got to be one of the most beautiful backs I have seen on a Master Model or many other mandos for that matter! And the scroll is supremely perfect!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, go ahead & buy one. Gibson is putting the measures in place to assure that new MM prices hold the line........ #

My Master Model is an '01 with a one piece back(nice figuring). #I saw Greg's ad and pretty much figure that we all think our "kids" are the smartist and best looking on the block--can't imagine a better sounding or playing mandolin than mine. #My opinion, of course.

I don't know how they rate, but if Charlie will send me about 5-10 to test drive for a while, I'll do the research and let you know. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

My MM is an '02 model that I have played countless hours. It sounds as good as any truly great mandolin that you could play. I could not imagine ever parting with it. I recently played a couple Of Gils that I thought were a bit easier to play, though. There has been a huge tone and volume change in mine since it was new. I would anticipate that the '01 that you mentioned should be played in and roaring by now. If not then I would probably move along. If you are worried that '01 was the first year that the MMs were made and that they have refined their building subsequently, I would remind you that Grisman's Loar is 1922 model and not a '23 or '24. A great mandolin is just a great mandolin.
