Hi folks. I just got into mandolin after a few years of guitar. I live in Harnett county here in the great state of North Carolina. Between Ral. and Fayetteville. I was wanting to know if you know of any teachers in my area and where local pickers are playing. I have no skills yet but would love to sit in and steal...I mean soak up, all I can. Thanks for any help and advice you can give me.

DaveO.

I understand there are jams at Zepp's music in Wendell (outside Raleigh) for beginners on Tuesday nights and advanced players (you'd better bring your A-game) on Thursdays. There is also a mando pickers group that meets in raleigh. It's a yahoo group that I'm sure someone will let you know about.

People meet in New Bern and Kinston as well.

I've seen Jimmy play before. Great player and singer. Does he teach too?

Hey all you NC mando players -- I am hearing that there is a concert honoring Jim and Jesse McReynolds to be held in Raleigh NC around the end of october -- one of our area's finest players , Charley Rappaport and the American Gypsies -- are gonna play , together with a whole bunch of other fine mandolinists. If you cannot find a teacher before then , Charley does do private lessons on mando as does his partner Joe on guitar . Call him at 814-440-2555 to set something up when he's in --- wisht I could be there but work surely does interfere with music. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif

Never forget, when you are old and gray and sitting with your buddies on the front porch, will you look over and say "Remember that day at work, wasn't that the greatest." I doubt it. Thanks for the tip on the teacher.

NC has its fair share of influential mando pickers, both young and not-so-young: to the central and west - Dewey Farmer, Tony Williamson, Ashby Frank, Ronnie Prevette. To the north - Rick Allred. Piedmont and east - Jerry Stuart, Mike Aldridge.

I'm sure I'm leaving some out - maybe F5 Loar can chime in.

I know Jerry Stuart is teaching in Siler City if that's not too far. Not the best choice for Dawg or other jazz/progressive styles but solid on Monroe style Mando.

I teach mandolin out in Leicester, just west of Asheville.

Thanks Greg H. Siler City is not that far for me. Asheville is a 2-3 hour commute. Thanks again.
