A great loss. NPR did a lovely tribute that I was listening to driving home from work tonight.

Very sad.

I'm somewhat oddly and remotely connected to Liam. I met his son Donal about a year ago and bought a guitar from him. Still have it. It is a terrific guitar. I recall meeting in a Mobil Gas Station parking lot off Interstate 91 in near Springfield Mass giving the guitar a quick look see and then giving him 2 large ones cash and heading back up to Vermont. Like a drug deal only it was a guitar. But the guitar has the celtic mo jo for sure.

Sad news about Liam Clancy, he had been unwell for quite some time.

His son Donal is carrying on the family musical tradition - he plays guitar and bouzouki on the recently released Mike Rafferty & Willie Kelly CD "The New Broom".

Cheers,
Jill

I had the privilege of attending a Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem concert many years ago. I still have pictures of it in my memory.

It is sad and I. too, offer condolences to the family.

"Oh all the comrades that e'er I had
are sorry for my going away
and all the sweethearts that e'er I had
would bid me one more day to stay
but since it falls unto my lot
that I should rise and you should not
I'll gently rise and I'll softly call
goodnight
and joy be with you all."

Like every other modern ballad singer, I owe a tremendous debt to the musical legacy of the Clancy Brothers. Goodnight Liam, and thank you.

As fate would have it, I ran across that video yesterday and learned of Liam's passing. Rest in peace, Liam.

Isn't he the last of the original lineup?

Yes, he is the last. Tommy Makem died a couple of years ago. I loved his music as well.

I think the Clancy Brothers brought Irish music right into the fore in North America. They became the forerunners that prepared the way for the Chieftans, when they started touring over on this side of the Atlantic. For other less known bands as well. Ryan's Fancy (1970's) here in the Halifax area as well and I'm sure for Irish music groups that have local followings across the continent.

Rest in Peace, Liam.

My daughter and I have always loved the Clancy Brothers. He seems like he was a great fellow.

Can't believe he'll ever stop singing, wherever he is now. Music carries the spirit, with or without a body or instrument.

In addition to his music, Liam was a fine writer. His autobiography is a great read. Liam had an amazing life.

Donal is indeed carrying on the tradition proudly -- as fine a player of trad music on guitar as you'll find. His flatpicking opened me up to the possibilities of guitar as a lead instrument in Irish music. Many from his generation (e.g., Aoife Clancy, Robbie O'Connell) of the extended Clancy clan continue to make wonderful music that's a tribute to Liam, his brothers, and Tommy.

He had a nice spot talking about their time in Greenwich Village in Scorsese's Dylan biography "No Direction Home".
