I would love to get some information and elucidation on the layout and location of the Flatiron (Montana) x-bracing for their F-style mandolins.

Why was this style bracing used instead of two tone bars on each side of the F-holes?

Sonically, what is the goal of using an x-brace style instead of the more traditional tone bar layout?

Thanks,
Steve

I don't know why no one has responded before now. I wrote an answer to a similar query in the "Questions" section of American Lutherie #95 (Fall, 2008). My answer occupied slightly more than a full column of a page, and as such was more extensive and thorough than what I would typically post here. I also listed some other references in other issues of American Lutherie - reading to broaden your understanding of what bracing does.

You might try contacting Bruce Weber at "Sound to Earth" direct. He's a great guy & would probably give you the info.you're looking for himself when he has time,or,have one of his guys contact you with the info.,

Stuck somewhere in the recesses of my memory is a factoid that flatiron x braces intersect under the bridge.

Spruce is stiffer along the grain than across it. Braces along the grain (parallel) reinforce this strength, and angled (X) braces reinforce the across grain stiffness. There are many possible variations and outcomes.

Pre-9/11, I was flying with my Flatiron Artist. I asked the x-ray associate if I could go behind and look at the mandolin case as it passed under the x-ray. She agreed, and I saw the X, pretty much right under the bridge.

Call your inter-library loan and get the Cohen citation. If you are interested in knowledge on bracing and how it affects sound, that would be step one. I just play my Flatiron (A5-1 with x-bracing) and enjoy it a lot!

I ordered a copy of American Lutherie #95. The education continues.
Thank you,
