I got some wood from a pallet where I work that is very white in color. And also seems a bit on the soft side.
After carving on the wood a bit I tried to figure out what it smelled like.I knew I had smelled that smell before.
I sure it is the same wood used for popsickle sticks!
What kind of wood is this and can it be used in a mandolin???
Thanks for your help.

Popsicle sticks are made from Aspen, a member of the poplar family...
The wood has been used sucessfully in violas and cellos by some very respected makers, most notibly Guy Rabut of New York City...
It should work fine for a mandolin, if you think that a soft hardwood will work for you...

I made the sides for my #1 and #2 out of poplar. Wonderful to work with, nothing special to look at.

Thanks for responding.
Now....could I use it for the top? or the back? or both?
I thought maybe I would practice building my first F style with it.But would like to end up with something I could play and maybe sell.
I plan to do a solid black mando so the plain look of the wood would be o.k.(it is lacking in figure of any kind).
Where do I look to find the "stiffness" properties of wood?
Thanks All.
