View Full Version : Mandolin Archive Suggestions
Hello folks,
I'm working anew on the Mandolin Archive (http://www.mandolinarchive.com) site, and thought I'd solicit feedback from you guys. I'm working on categorizing features and improving the searches now that there is a fair amount of content in there. What else would you like to see?
Did anyone here read the Loar article (http://www.mandolinarchive.com/articles/loar_diary.html)?
How about this reprint from George Gruhn (http://www.mandolinarchive.com/articles/orville_f.shtml)? Would you like to see more of these?
For those of you who do searches fairly often, what is missing now that you'd like to be able to browse for?

Dan,
Your site is near perfection as far as I'm concerned.
I would however suggest you add a keyword search for the Description field or the whole text in one record. This would allow for searches such as blackface, sheraton, pumpkin, handel etc.
Combined with this, it would be nice to have a tick-box restricting searches to record with photos... The reason I'm suggesting this is because I often spend some time just browsing the list, gazing at the photos...
Just a thought http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
I'd reply but I'd just be an echo. Oh, I did reply....

Dan,
"Did anyone here read the Loar article?" Don't you mean, did anyone here NOT read the Loar article?
I read it and loved it. Same with the Gruhn reprint. My thirst for Gibson-related articles knows no bounds, and I suspect the same is true for many of us.
If I can think of any specific suggestions, I'll be sure to pass them on. But as it stands, the Archive is already an incredible resource. Thanks for the great work!

Fuzzy serial number search. If you don't have the exact match, then I'd like to see the one's around it or possibly the nearest of a specified type e.g. A4.

Dan,
I'd love to see a gallery of pictures which could be indexed by maker and/or subject -pegheads, bindings etc. - and I would love to be able to print them selectively instead of having them interspersed with written posts. The pictures often get chopped onto a couple different pages.
Thanks!
Grandmaringer: working on something similar to that now.. have a bug in my perl otherwise it's almost done!
jmkatcher: it does actually already report a range of serials above & below if there is no exact match
John: ok, I have something like the search you're describing in-progress...
updated.. I fixed the perl bug. Lots of instruments are now showing features that are stored checkbox style. I'll work on the search to actually look for this next http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Dan I love your site. My preference would be to add whatever history there is on the instruments. Its adds a lot to know where its been even without naming particular owners. Thanks, Rich Michaud
