I want to build a neck with an ebony stripe down the center. How is the best way to do this.
I was thinking of glueing up a sandwich of maple/ebony/maple with the ebony 1/8th inch thick, then progressing as normal building the rest of the neck.
Is there a problem with the strength of the neck under the nut position? I've heard of necks breaking there before.
What glue would be best? Hide glue, epoxy, titebond?
Are there any good websites that discuss this?

Breaking... mostly on mandolin scrolls.. headstocks? Rare.

Neck stripes are fine, 1/8th sounds wider than I like.. I just use a piece of dyed holly overlay, for the asthetic of it. TightbondII works great.. hide glue as well, I like hide glue, it goes well with modern player's common sense. ;)

I use a "three piece neck" or laminated neck with all my mandolins and mandolas. Titebond works a treat with laminated necks. The neat thing about having that strip down the center is that it looks good and gives you a center point to work from when carving and orientating the neck.

Before you do the lamination make sure your gluing surfaces are dead level and parallel with each other. Don't force an irregular surface into contact with another with extreme clamping pressure. Also make sure the timbers you use are well seasoned.

Is this what you want to do ?

I don't know how it was done (it's from Driftwood #006 (http://www.driftwoodmandolins.com/Mandolin006.html)). The description states Ebony overlay and underlay...

I think it's very lovely though http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Thanks everyone for your input.I can now go ahead with the neck stripe confident it won't fail.I will go thinner than 1/8 and make sure I get a good glue joint surface.

The ebony overlay and underlay refers to the headstock veniers. The neck is a solid three piece glue up.

French guy posted some nice necks he did a while ago. I actually prefer the look of the stripes. I am gluing up one now with a indian rosewood stripe. John
