My jamming partners are considering having a jam where we all exchange instruments and play something other than our first love. Everyone is really excited about it. I have claimed the dobro. Seems like an easier instrument to, at least, find a simple melody on. Has anyone else tried such a jam and if so, how did it go? Ours will probably be a train wreak, but everyone is sooo excited about it.

I've done it a couple of times, and it's a real blast! We had a few really good players who were learning another instrument, plus a couple of beginners on their 1st instrument, and we got together to play what we could. Having a majority of very good players -- but just mediocre on their new instruments -- made it lots of fun, because the basics like timing and taste were there in spades, but we all had to play simple tunes very slowly. It was kind of like driving a Ferrari in 1st gear. Very fun while it lasted. It works best if you have some tunes that you agree to work on, and can put in some practice time individually.
