I have a nice TKL #8952 Professional Arch-Top Oblong F-Style Mandolin case. I really love this well made coffin, but being a newby I don't really know what the "case cover" is supposed to be used for. It is a nice piece of two ply material the same red material that the case is lined with with a silk-looking material sewn on the back. It covers the mandolin completely in the case but is smaller than the case is inside.

What's it for? http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif

A Nylon canvas zippered cover/bag to a)keep the cases vinyl less dinged-up, and the better designs, allow you to load it up with more stuff, music folios, cables, more spare strings etc, etc.

No, he is talking about that piece that comes with TKL cases that you lay over the mandolin. I really don't know what it is there for but it does keep dust off and maybe adds a little layer of protection between the bridge and top of the case. Who knows?

It could be there as an added element of surprise when you are opening up your mando case. What's inside? Oh, there it is! Oh no, another layer of red felt. Ahh, now there it is!

Thanks MandoJeremy!

Now I know what it's for. To give a reason to keep the retail cost above $200.00.

Glad the seller threw it in for free!

Oh that , I wish one of those came in my guitar case, I see it as an insulation buffer to allow the temperature difference between the instrument and the room temperature to equalize in a less dramatic manner than creating cracks in the lacquer.
My Archtop case got a 3/4" thick piece of foam under the lid,too , as the up is sometimes down. little brass feet wiggling in the air.

I always thought it acted as a chamois to keep things from being overly moist in there...

It's a blanket, so when your mandolin goes to sleep, it will be nice and cozy.

When you open the case, gently remove the blanket, and play something soothing on your mandolin. It will then happily wake up.

and a few bars of Brahm's lullaby as you pack it away.

do the Army-navy ones get jerked out of a sound sleep by rattling a truncheon around in a polished steel garbage can?
