I'm a long time acoustic guitar player recently turned mandolin beginner. Bought a Fender FM-52E, acoustic/electric and it's time to change strings. Problem - I don't know how to remove the foot plate at the base that covers the string insert area. No visible screws to loosen and I'm assuming it either flips up or slides down, but afraid to force without knowing. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Grasp the top of the cover and lift up and towards the end pin. It'll come right off.

Another thing to remember: the bridge on the FM-52E isn't fixed, so if you like your set-up, make sure it doesn't move when you change the strings!

Ditto what SiFi says. I usually change one string at a time, starting in the center and working out. That way the bridge position remains the same.

Cover of tailpiece should slide off towards the tailpiece, if its loosened up by just lifting , it will be a topic of rattling coverplate topic thread soon.
#FWIW: #a dampening strip of felt, on the undeside of the cover,a #leather, or felt strip over the edge of the bottom is a good thing.
