For $700ish I think you can do better. Did the 915 Eastman fall through, then? You're paying for extra fingerboard inlay, which I always found distracting, I prefer dots but YMMV. For that same $700 there are other, mandolins available new and used. I still have a bottom of the line Johnson but am happier with the look and feel of the Eastman lines. Have you played one and liked it?

No, the Eastman deal did not fall through. Still waiting on that one. I had an Eastman MD-504 last year but was uncomfortable for me to play.

If your issue with the Eastman was the neck, you likely won't like others in their line. They all seem narrow and V-ish to me. Have you had a chance to play a Johnson? If you want a chunkier neck in that 700 range consider the Breedlove Quartz (used). They seem chunkier and more C shaped. Good luck.

Johnson reputation for guitars is sort of medium quality, not bad to start with. I don't know about their mandolins. I'd stick with the brands normally recommended in " what mandolin do I need threads". It worked for me on my Kentucky.

As to JEStanek's comments on the fretboard, I played a very nice mandolin from a local builder that had a beautiful inlaid fretboard. It was very confusing and I had to keep counting frets. I am pretty new to mandolin though.
