I need advice on removing the endpin, and also where to find a replacement.

..cut it off and ream it out...suitable replacements can be found at Stew-Mac or Greg Boyds.

I'd try to gently pry it out before cutting it off. I use a piece of thick leather to shield the side wood and a "fork" type piece of wood I made to pry on the end pin.

Thanks for the feedback. The prying technique scares me too much, but I have a good friend and neighbor who's a cabinet maker and has done some instrument building and repairs. I'll pass this advice on to him and see what he thinks he can do. BTW I was putting on a new Dude-Oden tailpiece. I broke the button off the end of the pin and got it on anyway.

I got the tailpiece from Ken Oden after many months of waiting. I can't do pictures, but it looks like the one from Dudenbostel's pictures of the building of Chris Thile's mandolin. I paid $130 for one with a matte cover (unbuffed).

Can you remove the tailpiece and then does the end-pin fall out?

I wish...the tailpiece would not come out unless the endpin was removed, or in my case the wooden ball on the endpin broken off so the tailpiece could slide off the endpin.

GB! Don't touch at air strap button! Don't you realize boy that you're compromising the originality of that box? Even if it's busted,it's still original. That's what makes your mando valuable. Learn to hold your arm under the point to play standing up. Maybe won't sound so good, but folk really in the know will understand. Also, get rid of that sleazy new tailpiece. That aint original is it? Keep it like it was. That's what I'm doing with my retirement 1925 Geezebflopper Beta 9..keeping her like she was. By the way,if you're going to throw that tailpiece away, could I have your address and the location of your garbage can?

Sounds like good advice to me. Actually, I'm stealing a small paper clamp from the office to hold the strap to the endpin. Another idea would be to make a 1/2'' insision on my right side so the endpin will fit there without the need of a strap.
