On impulse last year I bought what was described as a "mandolin kit" on ebay. It was cheap, and exactly what I thought it might be - not a kit, but a mandolin that someone started and gave up on after a few mistakes. It is now mostly complete (with a few compromises that will be okay because I did it, although I wouldn't buy one like this), and it is time to join the neck to the body. The dovetail does not fit very well, but should fit with a couple shims - what wood should I use?

What wood do you have?
I like to use mahogany because it is easily worked and stable.
If I didn't have any mahogany and needed shims, I might use walnut or anything that isn't too hard or too soft or too likely to split or break. You want something easy to work, stable, and hard enough to resist compression. Also you want a wood that glues well, so if you have a bunch of rosewood, that might not be a good choice.

Thanks. I was considering walnut, because I have some thin pieces, and thought mahogany was the other logical choice.
