View Full Version : Instrumental bluegrass/celtic bouzouki music?
Can anyone recommend any recordings/artists? A lot of what I've heard seems to be either mostly backing up a singer, or as part of a larger band where fiddles & other instruments are more to the fore. I'd like to hear mostly bouzouki playing the melody of the tune.
Posted this at the end of the thread I started about beginner's bouzoukis, but then decided it might be better as a separate thread.
Check out the Tim O'Brien concert I mentioned in the "Must have recordings" thread: there's a couple of 'zouk instrumentals in there.
HTH John.
gerald trimble's first flight, Roger Landes' Dragon Reels.. those are the two that are almost exclusively bouzouki lead.

Joseph Sobol plays bouzoukis and citterns in finger style and has solo records. Unique and wonderful stuff.
I'll add to the Roger Landes catalog, and tho it's not the primary instrument, the CD "House To House" with Randal Bays, recorded live in house concert performances, is a splendid bouzouki
record.
I don't actually know many that feature a bouzouki as the primary -&- melody instrument, but I like it as a duet component a lot.
Fiddler James Kelly and picker Zan McLeod do tremendously well on "The Ring Sessions," tho that does have Zan playing guitar on some of the cuts.
Beth Patterson of New Orleans doesn't play any other instrument but her bouzouki(s), so her recordings are based on them. Not strictly bg nor "celtic," she still features her zouk playing all the time.
I hope this helps,

sheesh, if you want Dragon Reels new, it is $76 and if you want First Flight new, then that is $129!?!? :disbelief:
Of course, if you want them used, then the price drops down to a more barely reasonable $9.45 and $30, respectively. :(
the prices come from Amazon.com.

Angel - you can get Dragon Reels new from Roger for $16.50 shipped in the US. Great recording! Just go to his web site. First Flight...I don't have a source for new copies - may be out of print. Anyone?

Funny, Amazon did that with our Culchies CD, too. We were looking at listing it with them but the paperwork was backbreaking, so we blew it off and listed it with CDBaby (who were wonderful). Then it showed up on Amazon at something like $65 a copy! Wotta hoot! We passed that around for laughs, too.
Back on topic...
Tim O'Brien's album "The Crossing" features his octave mandolins pretty boldly, albeit w/in an
ensemble context. I like this CD a lot, it's mostly about Tim's Irish roots.

I can't find a source for the First Flight recording that doesn't want $100+ for it. And I'm sorry but no cd is worth that to me! I also tried ordering Dragon Reels and House to House from Roger's site last week but so far my card hasn't been charged and I've received no response, even after a follow up email. I hope all is well with him!

Here are a couple more good ones:
Robin Bullock - Midnight Howl, among others
Dan Beimborn - Shatter the Calm (I really like his version of the Pogues' "War March Trilogy)
