My first mandolin (Loar LH-500-VS) arrived today.Soon after tuning it up and playing a few chords, a song came to my head, one that I've known for years but rarely (if ever) played. It almost played itself on the mandolin, "Pack up your Sorrows," and I realized it's because in my head I hear the dulcimer and the mandolin is much more suited to that sound than my guitars. It's much like when I got my Guild Artist Award earlier this year and it practically demanded to be played with a swing rhythm. I guess some instruments just have their own personality that has to be honored.

PS. I'm already getting a little taste of MAS as I was looking at Bouzoukis and bowlbacks on eBay! I'm almost regretting giving away a Harmony archtop guitar that I had been telling myself would make a nice octave mandolin with a little work. :)

Very nice, Brad. Peruse the "eye candy" pages to whet your MAS and CBOM-AS appetite. Bon appetit!

bienvenuto! ... if you've got the equipment, i'd really like to hear a sound sample of your LH500.

i know what you mean about following the tune in your head - much easier to play and i usually get a better result - bill
