Hey, here's another newb question. Do you have any online resources where I can learn about the qualities different kinds of wood have for acoustic instruments? Thanks!
Start with the LMI catalog. Not mandolin-specific, of course, but helpful.

I've often pointed people to Chris Baird's Arches Music page (http://www.archesmusic.com/tonewood.html)for generalities on woods tonal qualities. In the end, these generalities can be either enhanced or detracted from with the skill of the builder based on how much they have worked with a particular species and their expertise in finishing the instrument.

There are lots of books available as well as internet resources. The best is to get with someone who really knows wood and spend some time with them. You can learn as much as you can and there are still others who know more than we think possible :) .
