I am going to get a tatoo, to keep up with my kids, and wondered if anyone here has any pictures of mandolin related tats that I could see. I have in mind a Gibson F5 with something like "Life is Good", or something equally positive in script, but am totally open to new idea. Thanks for any help.

Dana, Welcome to the Mandolin Café. Take a look at some of them in this thread (http://www.mandolincafe.com/forum/showthread.php?t=15662&highlight=tatoo).

Once upon a time it was the parents that set the example for the kids. ;)

Even if you get the tattoo, you won't keep up with your kids.

You got that right. And when did parents start following their kids lead?

I don't know. Do you have kids and did they their iPod before you did? :))

dana - d-o-n'-t ... d-o ... i-t ...
i wish you a long and happy life in any case ... but ... an elderly person with tattoos - faded, usually; tucked into the fatty folds of less than vibrant looking skin - looks a bit like a spotty toad that crawled across a wet comic book.

Hey Dana, don't listen to these naysayers... go for it. The thread allready mentioned has some mighty fine tats to get ideas from and listen to the artist who is doing the work, they may have some suggestions as well.
have fun..

Wow, having checked out that other link, it looks like this subject has been "rode hard and put up wet" like the cowboys sometimes say.
Also, nice looking sandwich, Bill. You've got me hungry for lunch, and I haven't even had breakfast yet!
Oh yeah, about getting yourself inked. I'd say go for it, but do it for yourself, not for your kids. Remember, tatoos, like herpes, are both in the same "friends for life" category. Choose carefully...

I've kicked this around for years and STILL haven't come up with anything to commit to. Heck, I had enough trouble this weekend deciding what I should get for my first ever pair of glasses. I still haven't bought any yet.
I'd say go for it after alot of thought.

The coolest tattoo I have ever seen belongs to a friend of mine. She has George Harrison on her arm, then she dropped her pants to show me Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band on her thigh. Mandolin Tattoos are cool too.

Thanks for all the feedback, and to answer a few, my son is 24 years old, not a child. My desire to have one is not related to keeping up with his youth, just always wanted one but never had the guts to make it happen.
I wanted to express my love of the F5, and of the music, so I am still searching for something that fits. It will be something that makes me happy and hopefully doesn't gross anyone out at the nursing home many, many years from now. Peace.

I don't know how well this will come out. I had a tatoo of a f5 and harley wings, which look like they are rotating, put on my right arm. I love both, mandolins and harleys. The wife said I could not do a tatoo with her name on it. I get a lot of comments about the tatoo. I had it done at the ripe age of 59. I had received my new Click, and am test running it a few weeks before sending it back for the finish.

Hi! I'm one of the people who contributed to the discussions linked to earlier. The person with probably the biggest mando tattoo that sent in a photo! I got my first tattoo (kitty cat eyes, nose & mouth) when I was probably 45. My sister (who was 58) and I went together, and got them a few inches above our ankles, as we figured no matter how much the rest of our bodies aged, our ankles would still look good! My daughter, who is 26, is my most tattooed child, and while I wasn't thrilled with her excess at first, now, I don't even notice them! Surprisingly, the more she got, the less noticable they are!
Last year, at almost 55, I decided to show my love of my mando, and one of her tattoo artist friends, designed my tattoo, and I had it put on my other leg, it goes almost from my ankle to my knee!
There are lots of people who think tattoos are horrible, but, tattoos are also gaining more acceptance. They aren't just for convicts, sailors and Hell's Angels any more!

I've had a tattoo on my left forearm for about 40 years. When I got it, decent folks did not do such things. If I had been smart I would have had it on my upper arm where it could be covered by a shirt easily. That would be my advice...be able to hide it easily and comfortably for the times you really don't want it to show. There are those times.
If I were to have another tattoo, or if I could redo the one I have, it would be a mandolin headstock with a Fern inlay. I have no idea why, just think it would be cool! I doubt seriously I will ever do that. I have far more important places for what little money I have! : ) . If you want one, go for it. Just think carefully about placement and realize you cannot move it once it is there. After it is there about six weeks you will forget you have it unless someone else points it out. I would encourage you to ensure the person doing the work is very good at what they do and can do what you wish. Over time the colors will fade and only the black will be there. Just be prepared for that. UV rays (sunlight) will make them fade faster. That is another reason to be able to easily and comfortably hide it. Have fun with the process....it is just like childbirth...it only hurts for a little while and the results last forever! :) .

I was ready to get a flowerpot tatto on my arm... but then I got afraid that someone from Gibson might see it and make me have my arm amputated! :))

Another option: visit a local tattoo artist -- maybe even bringing your favorite mandolin with you -- and tell them about what you have been thinking about, what styles of tattoos you've seen in the past that may really speak to you (e.g., Tribal, Celtic, Asian, etc.), and show them sample pics of tattoos you've seen that you like. Then ask them to come up with a design created especially for you, for a custom piece of body art that is as unique as you are.
BTW, my favorite music-related tattoo I've ever seen is bass player Bryn Bright's...
(Caution: it might look kinda weird on a guy, Dana. ;))

I've considered a 'pull the ring to hear the dummy talk' ring and cord for my upper back , but live in a cool climate now, so no one would see it to enjoy sharing the joke.
perhaps a coin slot on a shoulder, for busking humor?

That's essentially what I did. Luckily, the tattoo artist that designed my tattoo, was also a musician.... I can't remember what instrument she said she played (or had grown up playing.... maybe something like the harp!) but, I sent her a picture of my mandolin, told her about my playing, and showed her a tattoo style I liked, and she designed it for me.

When done well (and I like both of Barbara's tatoos) they are nice but really check out your artist or you could get the mandolin equivalent of this...
Yikes!
