I need help with finding new mandolin music to listen to. The number of albums available in UK shops is very restricted and I'm finding it difficult to sample new stuff.
So far, I have and really really like
Nickel Creek (2 albums)
Chris Thile (Not all who wander, and Into the Cauldron)
I have some stuff by Rhonda Vincent which I like, and some Bela Fleck ( http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif ) which I also like.
I'm really more in to very melodic tunes like Raining at Sunset and Desvairada than into some more bluegrassy stuff.
Any recommendations of more melodic mando tunes/artists I should try and get?
Cheers
Germain

Right in your backyard, you should look into Alison Stephens (http://www.alisonstephens.com)' recorded output. Being a stricly classical player, she is strong on "very melodic tunes." I am particularly fond of the most recent two, Tapestry (2003) and Con Espressione (2004). Her old Amon Ra CD, Music for Mandolin (1994) is a classic recording of the classic chamber works for mandolin (i.e. Beethoven, Hummel, Mozart, as well as the mandospecific Calace and Barbella for good measure), but it's not so easy to find any longer. Alison doesn't even list it at her site!

The term "melodic" probably means different things to different people. It calls these two CDs to my mind and I heartily recommend them both:
"Little River Stomp" by the Buckhannon Brothers. Available here:

"old-Time Mandolin Music" by Clyde Curley and the Oxymorons. Available here:

Not a full CD, but my favourite strummed 'English folk' mandolin is by Richard Thompson on John Martyn's song "Over The Hill" (on the CD "Solid Air"). It's even better if you isolate it to one speaker with the balance knob on the amp.
Fairport Convention CD's are full of mandolin, too.

Another UK artist worth checking out is Simon Mayor.
Here's his website:

As jflynnstl said, the term "melodic" might mean different things to different people, but I think Simon Mayor would probably fit your definition.

Tim O'Brien is an artist you'd likely enjoy as well.

Ted, you sound like you're slyly easing Germain into trying his first toot of cocaine. Dangerous...

Many thanks for all this advice folks, I shall spend this long weekend sampling all these flavours http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif I'm very excited about this, all new stuff! Great!
As to Jazz mando, I like regular jazz very much, but not improv. I need a tune to follow! I'll have a good listen at some Jazz mando...
Cheers

If your tastes run towards Thile both Emory Lester and David Grisman would probably appeal to you. David's web site is http://www.dawgnet.com/ and Emory's is http://www.emorylester.com/ I just ordered Emory's latest from his web site and it arrived promptly. Excellent stuff!

I second the recommendation of Simon Mayor. #Get "The Mandolin Album" and "The Second Mandolin Album." #You will never look back.
Also, I am currently really enjoying Grisman's stuff. #"Dawgnation," "Dawg 90", and all the DGQ stuff, all the Grisman and Garcia stuff...he's really a varied artist and great listening.
Also very high on my list is Peter Ostroushko. #Get his stuff with Norman Blake (also a fine mandolin player). #Any of it.
Finally, take advantage of what a great place this is, and support those who support the Cafe. #The excellent mandolinist Marilyn Mair is offering her Christmas CD for a mere $10, and the money goes to the Plucked String Foundation. #In addition, Don Grieser is offering a limited number of the Co-Mando double CD sets, recorded by participants in the Co-Mando email list. #Also a mere $10, and also a benefit for the Foundation. #I just ordered both. #A great deal regardless of the good the money will do!
I love these threads. #I always learn about new artists. #Carry on, folks!

Check out MusicScotland.com (http://www.musicscotland.com), where you can buy several of my favorite mandolin-centric CDs by the likes of Shooglenifty, Kevin MacLeod, Dagger Gordon, and Paul Kelly.

Also, I don't know if you've already checked out the MP3 files hosted here at the mandolincafe (click here (http://www.mandolincafe.com/mp3/)), but there is a very wide variety music by various mandolin artists posted there, with links to web sites where you can buy their CDs. I have had a lot of fun checking out tunes there, and have ordered a few CDs as a result that I really like.

Peter Ostroushko's Sluz Duz is a great CD and worth checking out. He has his own style, influenced by old world music.

Bonjour Germain.
Here in France too (The number of albums available in UK shops is very restricted and I'm finding it difficult to sample new stuff.)but now, we can order "on line" (County Sales, Elderly, etc.)
If "melodic" means instrumental, you should try these:
Strength in Numbers (Bush, Fleck, Meyer, O'Connor, Douglas)
O'Connor (Thirty-Year Retrospective, with Thile, Sutton, House)
Johnny Staats (Wire & Wood)
Butch Baldassari (many fine CD)
Matt Flinner
John Reischman...

Excellent ! Excellent!
Now at least I have a good strong list. I'm really looking forward to getting new mando music. The wife shares my feelings, she's sick of always listening to the same ones http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
Cheers!
