We are trying to get a show in VA, but it is not going
all that well. #I approached The Birchmere and I think
they liked the band, but phone calls to the venue are
needed from "the ticket buying public". #When a band has
not toured somewhere for 20 years, promoters have no idea
how much draw the band will have. p(703)549-7500

I'm on it Jim, I will put in my two cents. #Lucketts usually only is a fall/winter deal and their schedule is pretty much made up for this year, But...they had a one time summer show with David Via, and I think it was sucessuful, maybe you could track down the main lady, Kathy Freeman, I think the School House's # is 703-771-5281 and check out a show before the season starts in October. #Market it as a pre-season Bluegrass show. #They only have Saturday shows...Has the band ever played Lucketts? #Later, fill me in, dy.

Make sure eastern PA (Philly?) is on the list!

Jmoss
Sep-02-2004, 4:10pm
Thanks for the help. #It is what makes a tour like this work. #
I will call Lucketts. #
Maybe contact me off list at FWB@candlewater.com
and I can get more details going.

As far as eastern PA, we have not found a gig there yet. If you
know of a place, let me know about it and I will contact them
and send them our email promo. #

I am putting in about 6 to 8 hours a day on this and have a list
of venues that I am working on, but what really helps in a new
area tour like this is when there are calls to the venues requesting
the band. #

The problem is that, like us, there are many bands trying to
fit into the same dates. #To differentiate ourselves from the
background noise we need Frank's fans to call the booking person
and request that they look into getting the band. #To a booking person,
this spells ticket sales. Some places are an instant booking, but then
there are the rest of the venues who need to see some demand.

We surely appreciate anything that is done to help us secure the tour.
Again, thanks for all your help.

PS: #I am updating this post to let you know that
I did contact Paul who books Lucketts today. #He indicated
that they were booked up for this year. #I suggested
to keep us in mind for 2005. # More to come.

That is too long to wait...I did the e-mail thing and spoke of a pre-season show...we'll see if it comes about. If not, I will continue to put out the call, and I will keep in touch...later, dy.

Jim,

Contact the Cantab in Boston about playing the bluegrass jam on a Tuesday night:

http://www.cantablounge.com/bluegrasstuesday.html

Every Tuesday a bluegrass act plays, followed by the jam. James King did it last Tuesday. Also try JohnnyD's in Cambridge as well.

I have been in contact with Geoff Bartley who
works with the Cantab in Boston. That one might
not work out for other reasons. #Geoff put me
in touch with Stan Zdonik of the BBU. #Stan said
that the BBU concerts were already booked, but
that he might consider some other ideas. #
Stan is on vacation, but might have
more ideas when he comes back. #

I also sent out materials to Johnny D's.
That is Dana Westover <dana@johnnyds.com>
I haven't heard anything back from there yet.

I really appreciate the help!
We can make this work.

hey, i beleive lemon hill will be pickin in cleveland with frank, that would be my band hint hint............ im from philly and i can think of a few places that would be good... tin angel, but hard to book there, the fire, the point (not in philly i know del's been there) the north star bar, the painted bride, the TLA, and there is a slew of bars too, ive lived here my whole life and i also drive a truck to deliver food to restaurants and bars all over the whole city two days out of the week so i know this town..... and the thing with philly is ADVERTISING people will go to the show if they actualy hear about it... i remember i saw yonder mountain at the north star and barely anyone showed, there was no advertising in philly ... dont get me wrong... im not a yonder fan!!!! hehehehe if frank was to play here in philly, i know a good chunk of bluegrass fans and musicians, and places they go..... so i would at the least hand out flyers for the show. annnnnnnyways..... the most important thing is getting you guys paid, how much you need to make it worth while to visit my town, then we can work from there, i know you ve talked with my friend melissa in cleveland, and i talk with her frequently, maybe i could help out, i mean i know i could, if you guys are into it.... ill talk to melissa also my email is at the bottom of the post here... hope philly can be a stop on your tour!
KevinM if you are in philly, and want to pick or check out a local show with some other philly pickers drop an email johnkoutsouros@yahoo.com

John,
we don't have a venue in PA at this time. We would like to get
one. In Cleveland we are in constant contact with Melissa who
is working on the show there. #I seem to remember that she had
an opening band in mind already. #The venues/promoters handle
the opening acts when they want one. # #I have been sending out
promo and making calls to venues and I will work on the venues
you mentioned. #It does help to have people call the venues as
per my past posts.

Ditto on John's post as to the Point - they have booked David Long and Mike Compton for October 1- its a great venue and yep saw Del there. Del also played the Painted Bride - another terrific venue. Jim - do you want us to call to ask about booking the FW band?

Jmoss
Sep-09-2004, 4:07am
Yes, if you want Frank to come to your town to put on
a show and maybe a group lesson, then I need you to get
on the phones. #Phone them like crazy, have your friends
phone them. #Lots of calls! #Then email me telling me what
the venues are that you are calling so I can follow up with them.
Just remember, they will listen to you before they will listen to
the band. #You know, you have a lot of power if you phone
these places. #You can make them get most any band you want
if you get together with a few friends and make their phones
go crazy. #It always comes down to some guy or girl who is
afraid to book a band that will not draw and get them fired.
So they play it safe. #Is that what you want, Safe programming?

Make them take chances. #For every person that calls up, they
will think that there are 20 more who are not calling. #So say
things like this to them, "My friends and I want to find out where
this band will be playing". # Heck, when we worked to get Monroe
into San Francisco in the 1970's we would call up the Great American
Music Hall and ask if there was parking for our vans nearby because
we would be bringing families in to see the show if it happened. #
You could imagine dollar signs rolling by in their eyeballs.

We just lined up a show for Richmond, VA.
Check with the FWB web site.

"little brothers" in Columbus, OH were interested,
but had booked the day we had open in that part
of the country before Cleveland and after Dayton.

Also, I did get a hold of The Focal Point in St. Louis
and they had booked their Bluegrass for the season.
We don't have a show in Chicago yet.

Clubs that are still deciding today:

Johnny D's, Somerville MA 617-776-7450

Parting Glass, Saratoga Springs NY 518-583-1916

I am sure that if Frank's fans, wanting to see him,
were to call these venues and request the
Frank Wakefield Band, it wouldn't hurt things one bit. #

Frank Wakefield and I thank you all very much
for your help in making this tour a possibility.
The tour is pretty much booked at this point with
only a few issues to resolve. #One of these
issues will be the MA show. #The other is where in
NYC we will be. #These issues will be resolved
very soon. #So we hope to see all of you at
the shows AND remember that we will try to
have instructional group lessons for Mandolin,
Fiddle and Flat Picking Guitar in the cities that
we don't have to jump into the van and take off.
Let me know if you might be interested.
FWB@Candlewater.com
You can see the tour schedule at:
http://www.mossware.com/FrankLesn.html

I would like to say a few words here.
You should come away from this experience with
the understanding that you can make it happen.
That if a band that you like has not been in
your area lately, you can get them there by just
speaking up to the venues. # Like I said before
it was this kind of action that brought Bill Monroe
and Ralph Stanley with Keith Whitley to the Great
American Music Hall in the San Francisco Bay Area
back in the 1970's. #

This kind of power can be employed to organize
house concerts that run against the grain of the latest
trendy music scene. #Are you tired of what is out there?
Then change it. # What is a concert but a group of musicians
playing for an audience. #You need both. #Even the Rolling Stones
need both to put on a concert. #A bunch of musicians and fans
of the music when working, like a band, together can achieve great things. #

Thank you for all of your help on this and any other
Frank Wakefield Band projects. # We hope to see you at the shows. #
And at the shows come up and introduce yourself and take some time
to talk with Frank. #

Thanks again for your support.

Pacific Northwest is in February 2005.
We need start collecting venues for that too.
We are working on a show in Portland and
one in Bend, but would like to play the
Tractor Tavern again. #There is the Egyptian Theater
in Boise that I need to contact. #Don't know
who promotes those shows yet.

Any ideas are welcome. #
One other thing. I just got a box of photos
from Frank that span many years. I will start
posting them on the web site. #You just won't
believe some of them.

Should we call again about a Massachusetts show? Did you check into Frank having a mandolin clinic at the Music Emporium? If not I can arrange for a place to have a clinic, and help to get some paying customers together.

We in vermont would love to see frank and the band play at necters or maybe club metronome. I believe nov 20th is open at both venues. Franks got some old friends up this way that would love to see him.

Jmoss
Sep-21-2004, 2:06pm
The 20th is booked, it looks like.
There is a chance of adding on to the
end of the tour. #I will try to find time
to do the clinics where we are not driving
right away. #Cleveland is one place we will
have one, CT is another, Richmond VA another,
NJ for sure, maybe NY in the Village. #That is
just from looking at the schedule and considering
the driving. # These are the group lessons
where the limit is 10 people to provide a good
student teacher ratio.

I would call the venues you are talking about
and get the word from them. #I am going to feel
bad if we cannot get to see VT and MA. One limiting
factor is the return flights. #The closer we
get to Thanksgiving the harder it is to find
flights.
