While I was at the unvieling and dedication of Bill Monroe's boyhood home in Rosine in 2001, one of the bands that played that afternoon was called "1945". Of the bluegrass bands I never heard of that weekend, they were by far the best. Does anyone know what happened to them? I have searched high and low, but no results. The mando player was exquisite. The mando looked extremely small compared to his height being over 6' tall holding about 350 pounds....but he could make that mando talk! They made mention that he was the one that repaired the damaged Loar owned by Big Mon when he worked for Gibson. True or not...I don't know. Thanks.
the band is "1946", Charlie Derrington's band. Charlie is the guy who signs the mandolins at Gibson right now, heading up their production. He's a great player- I've got a disk of theirs and really love it

It seems the biggest guy always plays the smallest instrument.

Gee, Charlie is 350? Remind me not to complain too much when he's around?!

Actually Charlie was the original mando player for them. He is general manager of the Bluegrass Division and is repsonsible for all that goes on there...even the stuff I screw up http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif . Now the six foot part is about right but the 350....??? I'll leave that one alone.

FUNNY....BigJoe is not near that size and I would say that Charlie is about 260-275 and not fat at all!

Thanks to all of you for the information. I didn't mean for this thread to break down into a personal discussion about anyone's girth, just merely pointing out a fact that could lead to some information.
The website for "1946" is found at www.1946band.com and is headed as "David Peterson and 1946". No mention of Charlie Derrington on the site, only a picture in the archives shows him. An interview quotes him as not being with "1946" and working on another project. See question #21 in this interview: (http://www.mandozine.com/resources/CGOW/derrington.php).
Maybe my memory was incorrect about "him" carrying 350 pounds. Could have been someone else. Maybe he just lost weight since I saw them last. Nevertheless, the 350 pounds I quoted was being nice to whomever was plucking that mando.
I am trekking to LaGrange, Georgia on October 14-16 to see "1946" and a host of other bluegrass bands. Please join me and take a look at this site for more bluegrass info. www.hoofers.com.

Yes, David Peterson and 1946, they have a new recording out called Howling Blue Winds. There is one tune in particular called "New Pair of Glasses" that's gotten quite a bit of airplay. Written by Tom T. and Dixie Hall, it features Sam Bush on the mando. Definately worth checking out!
