Help newby here:

What exactly is meant by 'Chop'? Is it a technique or a sound effect? What is it?

It is a chord that is played with a strike like that of choping with an ax using no sustain muted as soon as it is struck. You do this by muffling with the fret fingers so it makes a choping sound http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif

It's basically muting all the strings when playing a chord and strummming down swiftly. Thus making a "chop" sound.

Isn't this technique also known as 'damping' - or is that something else?
