Anybody know? He's good.
Rickie Simpkins and the Blue Ridge Mountain Boys @ Pocono Mountain Bluegrass Festival - Video by Joe Michals (Thanks)
Here's a vid by a band with the same name, looks like some different pickers. This mando boy is on a Rigel, btw.

I like the low key but solid musicianship in the first clip - soulful breaks. I even liked that they look like they haven't skipped lunch since 1981.

Yeah, you're right Alan, he is good. I had to listen to that intro several times. I think it's cool when someone can take a tune that been played by millions of people and find something original to put into it.
He does a very creative break on Billy In The Low Ground (check out that nice little run at 1:25)

There are a lot of other vids with this guy, all worth a look. Is it Rickie's brother Ronnie? That's just a guess.

Yes, check out all of those videos. Some really nice bluegrass mandolin picking to be sure.
Thanks for the heads-up Alan!

Pickers are a dime a dozen. This guy made me take notice. I hear early Skaggs, Bobby Clark, Dempsey Young, Rick Allred, maybe even a little Julius Erving :mandosmiley:

Richie,
You beat me to it - I thought it was Scott - I remember seeing him up at Winterfest in Stroudsburg (I also remember seeing you there too!)

wow, I agree. It's so great to hear something different, inventive, and bouncy on the mandolin. That guy really caught my ear too.

Saw Rickie a couple of years ago playing mandolin with Tony Rice. I believe it was mentioned that something was going on with his shoulder (or other body part) that made it difficult to play fiddle. He did a nice job on the mandolin.
