As noted in this day in history, Ian Anderson is now 62. I've been following him and the rest of the Jethro's for quite awhile.
He is one of the reasons that I really wanted to learn the mandolin.
Just love Fatman, and the live version of A Christmas Song.
So here's to ya Ian,

Cheers

Oh yes! That was a good concert! Many moons ago ... They did the Aquaman show.

Aquaman? You mean Aqualung?

Does Anderson play the mando? I heard that Dave Pegg plays most of the mando for Tull.

Ian plays, so does Martin Barre (the guitarist) and Dave played a lot when he was with them.

These days is one thing. On the original recording is another thing. Another thing meaning Ian Anderson ... :)

Huh. All these years I didn't know Ian's birthday was so close to mine. I had this odd thought when I saw this thread's title - "I didn't know I played 1 legged flute." Then I remembered my birthday isn't till Thursday ... :whistling:

Yep, that's definetly IA playing mando and flute.

I saw Tull at Michigan State University, circa 1972 or 73. It was after "Thick as a Brick" was released because they played most of the album. Jenison Fieldhouse was a horrible place for concerts--sounded like Mammoth Cave in there.

I also saw Stephen Stills there--I believe he had his band from Manassas with him. On one tune he played a banjtar. He noted that it was a banjo tuned like a guitar. Also, I remember that the acoustics were so bad that people were shouting "Louder!" and Stills replied, "Listen harder!"

I saw them on that same tour, in Chicago. Drove down with some school friends from Wisconsin. They did "Thick As A Brick," then much of "Aqualung," and a few older tunes. Ian was dressed as on "Aqualung," with that long coat. When they did the song "Aqualung" somebody in an aqualung wandered out onto the stage. Some odd attempt at theatricality I guess. For some reason I don't remember much more about this show ...

I had seen them once before, at Newport Jazz Festival 1969, the first year they had rock acts. Imagine, if you will, on one night: Jethro Tull, Jeff Beck Group with Ron Wood on bass and Rod Stewart, Blood Sweat and Tears, Ten Years After, and Rahsaan Roland Kirk - who was really amazing. While his band had a slinky groove simmering, Kirk had some things to say about "some people think they know how to play the flute, and some people know how to play the flute," ending with, "Now I'm going to show you how to play the flute," and blew the roof off the place - and it was outdoors! Thanks to the information superhighway, Jethro Tull's set list: "My Sunday Feeling," "Bourée," "A New Day Yesterday," "Dharma For One," "Nothing Is Easy." You'll note the absence of "Serenade For A Cuckoo" - Ian knew better than to play that with the master on the bill. ;)

You have to click the red Tube icon and then paste the text into the space provided there.

And to heck with his birthday anyway - that was days ago. It's my birthday! :) (And that of Alfred Hitchcock, Fidel Castro, Annue Oakley, Bert Lahr, Don Ho, Midori Ito, Dan Fogelberg, Danny Bonaduce, LeAnn Rimes, and Wendy Whoppers.) Also, the day The Beatles arrived in 1965 for their second US tour, the day The Lovin' Spoonful hit #1 with Summer In The City," the day Fleetwood Mac made their live debut in 1967, and the day in 1971 that John Lennon landed in New York in permanent self-imposed exile from England. This and more at http://www.thisdayinmusic.com/

But this is nice, double mandolins and all. Got to love the crazy look in Ian's eyes now and then.
