Danny -

I just got one last month. Was playing for about an hour last night. Really nice, my first good mandolin, for now it's a keeper - way better than my playing deserves! Playability is very good, and nice ringing tones, especially I am finding on open chords, like for Celtic flavorings - though it chops well , too (though my chop needs a lot of work!).

A great value. I got mine cheap as the top has a couple small but noticeable dings from shop wear - couldn't have gotten a better deal!

Thinking like that only encourages MAS http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Every Collings I've seen/heard/played is a great mandolin!

I almost bought one a couple of weeks ago and I am still thinking about it. I think the MT is the most instrument for the money of any production mandolin on the market today.

I have had mine about 4 months or so, its a great sounding and feeling instrument. I believe its one of the first to have ivoroid top binding #308.Wicked flame back too. I still marvel at the crisp workmanship http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif

I own #389 and every time I play it I notice how the whole thing resonates. The craftsmandship is great, nice flamed maple back and sides and nice woody chunk when you hit it right. Since I play with the mando against my stomach I use a tone gard and volume has never been a problem.

Oooooohhhhhhhh yeeeeaaaaahhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

#467 is mine!
Mine! MINE I SAY!

And it has cured my MAS.
Beautiful elegant understated looks... NOT "simple" as in the A9 (yeah I'll say it!).
Beautiful elegant sound; good chop, loud, and a nice even sound across the fretboard.
The fretboard is sweeeet, the radius is nicer than I would have ever expected. The fatter neck is PERFECT for me.

I coulda spent LOTS more, but why?! This one is the one that bonded.

http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif # #560...It's a great mandolin. Great tone, chop and that hollow bluegrass rattle. #I got the MT as an interim mandolin while I'm slowly working my way up Michael Heiden's list, only 1.5-2 years to wait. #But the Collings is a keeper. #It holds its own tonewise with several other great mandolins I heard at Shady Grove last weekend. #This MT is only a week old

I bought #511 2 weeks ago in Lawrence at Mass Street. #

I played at least 10 different mandos, including the high-end stuff (F5's with all of the appointments). #Gayland was really great to work with. #We had all of the cases layed out as he endured about 25 recitals of Liza Jane. #I then started closing the cases based on price, sound, playability, looks, etc.

The MT2 was SO beautiful, and sounded really nice. #More refined in tone, but not not quite as loud as the MT. #I couldn't justify an extra $1500 just on looks.

It came down to the MT and an old Flatiron A (which also played nice and sounded really good). #In the end I picked the MT, mostly to torture my bandmates with! #They haven't seen it yet!

So, how do these MT's compare with the A9's? #Who's played both? #From afar they look similar, but is that where the comparisons end?

There is no comparison based on fit & finish & features.
The A9 is what's known in the car business as a "20 footer".........(looks great as long as your 20 foot away)

When I was shoping I was comparing the A9 and the MT. I bought the MT.

I bought #387 from Morgan Music in Lebanon Mo, he gave me a good trade in deal on my A-9. I really enjoy the response from this puppy and yes it is the loudest Mandolin I've had yet. Has anyone noticed much change in tone/volume since it was new ?

Mine didn't get noticable louder but the low frequencies and general resonance of the instrument have changed since it has been played for 4 or 5 months.

PS. I put a Tonegard on to keep it off my expanding belly (and protect it from being set down on it's back). Now the mando sings.

250SC,

Do you put your Tone Gard on, and take it off when you're done playing? I have an MT and I assume that it will not fit in the factory case with the Tone Gard on. What is the best way to handle this?

By the way, the MT is a fine instrument. Simply beautiful, and beautifully simple. All that, and a big loud chop!

Walter,

My mando fits in the case with the toneguard on. I also have a tonegard on my 000 Martin guitar and it fits in the case too.

250sc,

Do you use the Collings supplied case that came with the MT? Also, is it a "standard A" ToneGard that fits this model?

-Thanks

Walter,

I played with one of the sales people from Elderly a couple of months ago and he told me that, for some reason, the case that my mando came in is the more expensive case. Maybe Collings was out of the less expensive case when they shipped it.

Yes, the tonegard is the standard A style. Works great and Tony is great to work with.
