I am moving to Montgomery,AL in October 2004. #I have a very good bluegrass mandolin instructor here in Dayton, OH, but will need to find a new one there.

Anybody have any information that might help?

Jasper-

I live in Mobile (2.5 hours south of Montgomery) and I have to travel to Montgomery about once every 6 months. I have tried to find picking while there but no luck. There is a guy named Phillip Mann that has a great b@nj* site: http://www.bluegrassbanjo.org/

He is in Montgomery and I am sure if you emailed him he could tell you all about the bluegrass scene in Monkeytown.

Why not a heavy hitter like Niles Hokkanen. A day or two with him could last you a year's worth of lesson work. Well worth the travel and reasonably priced.

Hey Jasper:

I live in Auburn, 45 miles up I 85 from Montgomery. The third Tursday of every month there is a fun bluegrass jam at a restaurant called "Cock of the Walk" off of exit 58 in Opelika. The jam last from 5:30 til 8:30. Nashville is 5 hours up I 65. I traveled there in February to take a lesson from Roland White. Good luck with your move.

Jasper, there was a bluegrass band in Millbrook, AL with a mando player who posted on here a bunch and had a mandolin in the classifieds for a while. Can't remember his name or the group's name. I know that's not alot of help, but if you can somehow contact that band, they can point you in the right direction.

I grew up in Lanett, about 1 1/2 hour east of Montgomery, but moved away after college and now I'm planted in Iowa along with all the dang corn. War Eagle, Rooster!

Another avenue could be Fretted Instruments in B'Ham (Homewood). They may know somebody teaching in Montgomery. Wonder where Herschel Sizemore lives now? Maybe down by Mobile? Man, if you could hook up w/him... In fact, do a search on this board and look for Hershel Sizemore (spelling???). I remember somebody saying they took a lesson or two from him.

Good luck.

Rooster,

Are you an Auburn student or grad?

I went to school there and then lived in Auburn for awhile after graduating. Now I am in Denver...but, your reference to Opelika, etc. brought back some good memories.

War Eagle from the Lovliest Village. I finished at Auburn in 87 and moved back home to north Alabama. Moved back to Auburn in 2001 and have loved every minute of it. The move to Auburn got me back into the Mando and music scene. If I make it to the Supper Club I will have come full circle. I saw Nickel Creek at a small venue here in April and took a couple of my Mandos. They got me on the bus before the show and I got to enjoy hearing Thile do them justice for once. Oh the joy of living in a college town.

Jasper, There is a Saturday morning jam in Wetumpka, just NE of Montgomery. It is held in the only music store there (I think), but very smokey. If you get bored there, just ride up to the top of the hill; there on the north side is the women's maximum security prison. Rattle the fence a time or two and you'll hear some music! Also, there is a very good band up that way, "Home Remedy"; they have a web site.

I understand there was an athlete that recently graduated from Auburn, that just won a gold medal in the Olympics in Athens. That is great. He was so proud of it, he had it bronzed. roll tide roll

Alright Harrmob, now you're getting personal! I guess I'll just have to come down there to Mobile Music next Thursday night and pick with ya! I hear they have a good jam there on the first Thursday of every month. I am planning my work schedule to be there.

Beat Bama!

Looking forward to it, I'll be there at about 7:00pm, a week from today. I'll be the one playing a Weber, wearing an Alabama hat.

Hey Kevin, how fast are you driving, anyway?! It takes me 3 hours to Montgomery from Fairhope; of course, at my advanced age, I drive the speed limit.

Rooster, we have a jam here on the first Monday night of each month at the Coffee Loft from 7:00 PM 'til 9:00 or later. Fairhope is 45 minutes from West Mobile Music, unless you drive like Kevin. His trip only takes 15 minutes!
