Just replaced the ###### tuners on my A with a set of Grover Deluxes... absolutely fantastic tuners. Not sure why I struggled with the old ones so long... guess I was just busy playing.
Highly recommended!

Did the same on my Dean BGF. Also added an Allen tailpiece. Huge difference.

just switched to some Schaller's from the no name ones on my Givens...now I realize why I was the only one tuning up between every song and why everyone wondered why it took so long. #Just call me DUH!http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif

That the Ratcliff dasspunk? I've been thinking about switching mine out also--especially since the treble side tuners are not flush to the headstock.
Hey, are those Grovers the same size as the Schallers? Ste-mac seems to give slightly different measurements but I'd love to replace the Schallers. They're better than the $7 tuners I had before but very sporadic in their smoothness. Thanks for your help.

I am restoring a Clif Sargent mandolin that I purchased off Ebay and put Grover Deluxe Tuners on it and they are sweet tuners. Very accurate and precise. Stays in tune for days. What a difference. A little pricey but worth it, IMO.

Yeah jasona, that was my Ratcliff. Laura uses Grovers on her new ones I see...
I'm not sure what my old ones were... I only had to drill new top and bottom pilot (screw) holes. The three middle holes lined up just fine.
My soon-to-be BRW will also be sporting Grovers... their like buttah...

I think they are Gotohs (sp?). If there is drilling to be done, perhaps I will wait until I get it in for the refret it needs and have the luthier do it right. I'm afraid the carpentry skills were lost one generation back in this family http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

It only required drilling pilot holes for the screws... eg. using a small drill bit to start the screw hole... then finish screwing 'em in by hand.
