Been a Son Volt fan since "Trace", which I believe is one of the best albums of the 90s, and largely an overlooked one.

Thankfully the OP's spam messages have been promoting bands I like.

I was thinking the same thing.

Timely topic. I just started learning "Tear Stained Eye" a few days ago, and am also working on "Windfall". Heard "Drown" on the radio when the album came out years ago, but I never purchased it or heard any of the other tracks. In perusing their catalog on Grooveshark, there's a certain "same-ness" to a lot of the songs, lyrically and musically. But when Jay really hits one, it's out of the park!:mandosmiley:

I know what you mean Mitch. "Trace" was the musical highlight of '95-'96 for me. I was blown away when I heard "Drown" on commercial alternative radio (anyone else remember that?) and loved the rest of it just as much. But I've gotten the impression that the others since then have been more or less redundant--he's been pretty much the opposite of his former bandmates Jeff Tweedy and Wilco, who seem hell-bent on never repeating themselves. ("A.M.", "Being There", and "Summerteeth" are all over the place and all terrific.)

But if you haven't heard the Uncle Tupelo album "Anodyne" you might want to check it out. The back-to-back tracks "Chickamauga" (Jay singing lead) and "New Madrid" (Jeff lead) might be my favorite songs ever by each of the two guys.
