Looking forward to the Winfield Walnut Valley Music Festival coming up in September. Interested if any other Mandolin Cafe members will be at the festival?

I'll be there.

SLC, Utah
To paraphrase Tom Joad "Yeah I'll be there. I'll be all around in the dark. I'll be ever'-where - wherever you can look. Wherever there's a jam I'll be there. Wherever there's a mando drownin' out a banjo, I'll be there. I'll be in the way guys yell "Stella" when they're drunk - I'll be in the way kids laugh when they're hungry an' they know "slaw hawgs" are ready. An' when the people are singin' to the songs we play, and livin' in the tents they erect - I'll be there, too."

Look me up at Camp Avalon. Pecan grove, far S.E. corner next to the river. There'll be an f-5 painted like the Colorado flag marking the spot.

Jim,
I'll be there w/ a few of my Fort Collins buddies. I'm guessing you camp in the vicinity of Drew Horton and Brent Hawley, I'm hoping to meet up with my two mando heroes and play some hot swing! I'm a first timer as are my buddies so we'll be lost for awhile until we get our bearings.
Any advice for first timers?

Look for me at the Texas Camp -- won't be there until mid-week though. I'll be the guy with the Krishot.

Forgot to mention, I'll be in the Brigadoon Camp on the north side of 14th street in the grassy "Little Sahara" area (near the Glitter Gulch camp). This will be my 5th year. Although I play mostly bluegrass, the camp fiddle player has held an open Celtic/Irish jam session on Thursday & Friday afternoons the past two years. If anyone is interested in the jam sessions, let me know and I'll check with her as to the times for this year.

This sounds like a fun time...to bad I live in Oregon. Maybe some day I'll make it out there but I'd have to plan a year in advance at least.

Keith, all we can say is that once you've gone, Winfield is as hard to turn down as a free Nugget and life time lessons from........ http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Thinking about this but have some questions for those who have been there in the past. I live in a 38ft motor home along with my DH and golden retriever. I looked at the website and noticed that no pets or alcohol are allowed and all vehicles are searched to ensure these rules. Is this at the entrance to the entertainment area or does it include the campgrounds? (I have emailed the link on the website but so far have not had a reply. It is probably one inquiry in the thousands they receive) Is in impractical to come in with a motorhome of this size. The idea of having my "home" searched is a real turn-off. Is this standard procedure at festivals of this size? The only festivals I have attended in the past have been small events
psann,
They're pretty strict about the no pet rule but I've never seen them actually search any vehicles. If you're willing to kennel your retriever PM me and I'll tell you where I keep my German Shorthairs during the festival. As far as alchohol goes you can drink all you want in the campgrounds just don't try to take it into the stage grounds.

Wouldn't miss it for anything. #Went first time in '75 (you could shoot a cannon through the campground and not hit a soul!) then in '85 (New Grass Revival was the headliner!) then since '95 I've made the pilgramage annually except '01 (9-11...) # Due to the lack of a mando seminar, I signed up for the Dan Crary Flatpicking seminar this year the day before the festival...maybe John Reischman will arrive a little early and join Dan! #http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

One look at Karens picture above and you can tell that alchohol flows pretty freely in the campgrounds!!! #http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

Those Carp Campers are in a world of their own. #We think it is worth the price of admission just to see them! #They play the puddin out of their music. They are one of many "fixtures" #at Winfield

PS Everyone who stops by the Bat Camp will get a complimentary beverage! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif
I did receive a reply from the staff. They were adament about the no pets rule including the campground but did say they do not search vehicles in the campground. The invasiveness of having my home searched was my hot button. they also indicated that with a Rv as big as ours we would need to be there land rush day. If we can't get there early, I suppose we could just store it somewhere and bring a tent. Not sure yet it we can make it, but sure want to. Doing some scheming at the moment. GVD sent me some valuable info re a kennel. I appreciate the information that some of you have offered in private messages. It sounds like it would be an awesome experience.

I'm goin'. #Been every year since 1981. #I've always appreciated their "no alcohol" policy. #Having been warned that they do not have any...the logic is that I must bring my own. #I can't get there in time to park anywhere but the overflow area across the road. #But if you see a beat up old trailer with an animal band painted on back...come in and have a refreshing beverage with me and pick if you want. I'll probably be near the "G Spot" or the "One Fret Away" camps.
I can be found at the "No Philistines Camp"

Just in case you're a Philistine and wander into our camp be prepared for the consequences.

hey GVD! I'm can't go this year. Wish I could. Ended up buyin myself a fiddle instead. Have a great time and I wanna hear all about it.
Darn it Ash I was sure hoping you could make it again this year http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif #We all wanted to see you take home a new Collings after the mandolin contest #http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
Oh well maybe I can make it to Strawberry or one of the other fests in your neck of the woods next year. I'd like to hear you play a few tunes on that new fiddle. If it sounds any better than your old one people will be saying "Move over O'Conner, Ash is in the house". http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif

I'm from Newton. Rode down there on my motorcycle last Sunday to scout out the fairgrounds. Pecan Grove was cleared out for the landrush line which couldn't start forming until Sept. 1. There were quite a few camping in the Walnut Grove, don't know if there was another event going on or these were Winfield campers waiting for the landrush line up.
