Mike Marshall sent a note saying I should share the information that this is available in the U.S. Tocando com Jacob Partituras & Playbacks (http://atlanticobooks.com/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=523&category_id=7&keyword=jacob&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=18).

From the site: Songbook of Jacob do Bandolim songs includes 24 memorable waltzes & chorinhos recorded by Jacob do Bandolim and his group Conjunto Época de Ouro on 2 CDs: Chorinhos e chorões (1961) and Primas e bordões (1962). The CDs that accompany this book contain all of the original tracks from the 2 CDs as well as 24 "play-along" tracks which were also recorded at that time. You can listen to Jacob's original recording and when you play along with the "play-along" tracks, you are playing with Jacob's original band.

It's a fine book, and I've had a blast playing along with the rhythm section.
Note, though, that Elderly has it for about half the price (at least until you folks snap up the remaining stock).

GREAT resource, but not all the playalong tracks are the actual master tracks on the album, you can hear some differences in timing etc. from the master tracks- but where else can you find a playalong with real Brazilian acoustic instruments played by a real band?

Plus, the compositions are incredible, and you get two otherwise out of print Jacob albums on CD.

Good ears, John.

The story goes that the music-minus-one tracks were originally recorded as practice tracks for Jacob himself, prior to recording the release versions with the whole band.

Talking about walking in the master's footsteps!

Brazilian bandolimists (as well as cavaquinho, pandeiro and 7-string players) pretty much universally regard this as a Bible. Danilo and Dudu both have spent a lot of time with the recordings, and they both recommend strongly that we do the same.

Bit of trivia... 'Tocando com Jacob' came to our attention for the first time when Hamilton de Holanda brought a copy up to the 2006 Mandolin Symposium. In one of his classes, he gave it away to whoever could name his signature tune "Aquarela na Quixaba," which stumped us all. He scratched his head for another question, and asked us about the World Cup, which had just completed that year's first round. Paolo, our Italian regular, was first out the gate with the answer, and he scored the prize copy of 'Tocando,' which he took back to Italy with him, making it another year before it saw circulation in the Bay Area. Ironically, Brazil got knocked out in the next round, which was uncharacteristically early for them.

I've had my copy for more than two years -- got it from Amazon in March 2007 for $31.99. Great music, though sadly I haven't had the time to try to really play along with the backing tracks. Sadly, Amazon now don't have it in stock anymore.

Incidentally, looking through Amazon's listings for Jacob, I noticed that Yo-Yo Ma has recorded a cello version of one of his tunes, "Doce De Coco", which Ma seems to be sufficiently keen on to release on three different albums (on both the live and the studio versions of "Obrigado Brasil" and on "Appassionato").

"Tocando com Jacob (http://atlanticobooks.com/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=523&category_id=17&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=18)" a nice collection! I'm glad that you all enjoy it. Please note that price differences between Atlantico Books and other suppliers are because of the fluctuation of the dollar and the real (Brazilian currency). We offer the best possible prices for Brazilian music books and CDs, and we are always importing from Brazil. We specialize in Brazilian products.

It's a nice collection of choro tunes based on transcriptions of the recordings that Pixinguinha and Benedito Lacerda made in the 1940s.
