Sam Bush and his band were back in Olathe, Kansas last Friday for a free! concert. The city sponsors a free concert series in the summer at Frontier Park. Sam was here last year with Chris Hillman.
After the concert, Sam walked over to a tent to sign autographs and to visit with fans. There was a huge turnout for the show this evening and a lot of folks were lining up to see Sam. I happen to live just across the creek from the park and at that moment, I was struck by a total Mando Geek notion. I rode my bike back home to get my Mandolin with the intent of getting some pictures of Sam playing it.
By the time I got back there, the line was just down to a few folks. I pulled my Hogan F5 out of the case and handed it to Sam. He said right away that he does not endorse any Mandolins. I told him I just wanted to get a picture of him playing it for myself and so I could send the builder, Adrian Minarovic,a copy. He looked it over very carefully and commented a number of times how cleanly it was built. Then he took my pick and played a little fiddle tune. He said it sounded very nice. For some reason, it sounded better to my ears when Sam was playing it :))
I suspect Sam is handed Mandolins everywhere he goes and he probably says complimentary things about all of them. He struck me as a very nice fellow. He took a lot of time visiting with everyone who came by to see him. I thanked him for the pictures. He then made a joke about trying to steal my pick and then gave it back. It was a great ending to a great evening. I hope he comes back again next summer. He's one of my all time favorites.
