Greetings from a new member!

After many years of playing guitar, I got it in my head to try a mandolin. (I think it started after the night I saw the Ditch Lilies.) Spent weeks lurking on this board, reading posts and looking at the classifieds. In fact, I ended up buying my Mid-Mo M11 from the classifieds here.

Just want to say that I have been really impressed with this board. I'm on two other guitar related boards (different handles), but this board outdoes them both. I'm looking forward to learning as much as I can through the collective wisdom and experience of others here.

I have to say that I am thoroughly enthralled with the mandolin and have hardly touched my guitars since the mando arrived. This is the most addictive instrument I've played.

I have several parlor-size guitars and absolutely love the diminutive size of the mandolin. I envision all sorts of possibilities for taking it with me to places where I wouldn't want the hassle of taking a guitar (even a small one). An incurable case of GAS has me at surfeit with guitars, but I can see MAS in my future. Already I'm thinking that I'd like an A-style with F-holes.

My name isn't actually "billy," by the way. "Flatlanderbilly" is a takeoff on "hillbilly", because there aren't any hills to speak of in this part of Wisconsin. Outside of mandolin and guitar, my only hobby is bicycling - both road and off-road riding. It's hard to be too diversified when you're a single parent of a 7-year-old.

Regards,
Joe

Hi Joe, welcome to the cafe. Don't let your wife know you're here.

Welcome Joe! I'm a fan of parlour guitars too, and have two of the little beasties. I find smaller instruments very comfortable to play, and a 12-fret short-scale parlour is the next best thing to a mandolin :)

Welcome to the world of fifths and MAS. Make yourself at home, there's a wealth of information here and a lot of really nice folks. I haven't been here that long either, you'll feel right at home in no time.:grin::grin::grin::grin:

Hi Joe and welcome to the Café!

By "flatlander" I assume you're referring to southern Wisconsin. I'm from New England but I went to school in southern WI and I'd never seen such flat country. The highest point in the county was a highway overpass, and though it was only 25' up you could see for miles in every direction. Great place to watch thunderclouds sweeping across the prairie - till they started getting close ... ;)

I'm a Gibson guy but lots of folks here swear by their Mid-Mo's. Good luck with it, keep at it, and enjoy! :mandosmiley:

Thanks for all the welcomes!

Journeybear, yes, I'm in Southern Wisconsin. Southeast, actually, as in right by the big lake, about an hour north of Milwaukee. This pancake geography really does nothing for me, particularly after coming from San Diego.
