Was anybody at the Mutual Admiration Society (NC, Glen Phillips, etc.) concert in Lexington VA last night?

John Paul Jones played mandolin with Sean Watkins. The recording is here:

Chris said he'll be coming out with a solo CD on October 13th. He played one of the tracks.

The entire concert should be on Archive.org pretty soon.

After the show Chris played Bach Inventions. Absolutely amazing.

The entire band played for about an hour after the concert.

Really really great.

Did Chris say anything more about his solo CD? I heard something about he might have a vocal solo CD, or did he say it was going to be instrumental like the rest.

The song he did was a vocal. So yes, I guess it'll be a combination.

Here's the track:

I downloaded the Lexington show from the Live Music Archive. I want to convert the FLAC files to WAV so I can burn them to CD. Can anyone point me to a free utility that will convert FLAC files to WAV?

Thanks,
Steve

SteveW -

I haven't used it but there is a free converter at this site. (http://members.home.nl/w.speek/flac.htm)

If you try it, let me know how it went.

Tim,

I'll give it a try tonight and let you know. Thanks for the tip!

Lately I've been using the (free) dbPowerAmp Music Converter to convert FLAC or SHN to WAV. #It also converts WAV to FLAC/SHN and with plugins can do most any format out there. #See:

http://www.dbpoweramp.com/dmc.htm

and:
http://www.dbpoweramp.com/codec-central.htm

Don't forget to check http://www.bluegrassbox.com/ for even more live downloads (lost of mando content there).

On sept 4, the Hollywood Bowl has scheduled Nickle creek. #Is it just the trio or is it another stop on the MAS tour with that 6 piece outfit?

SteveW-

If you haven't done anything to convert the FLAC to MP3, I noticed that you can download a ZIP file with the songs already in MP3.

Saw MAS in Cleveland and loved every minute! John Paul Jones watching Thile with an ear to ear smile all night. The crowd was mesmerized by Thile's Bach piece and then erupted with such force at the end that Thile was obviously very moved. Killer version of Zeppelin's "Gallow's Poll". It looked like a lot of mics were set up at the sound board. Any hope of a live CD?

Man! Thile didn't do the Bach in the main concert, but he did do it in the after concert. I was watching every moment. It was jaw dropping. Seriously.
He was standing in the shadows and someone asked, "hey Chris, can I use a flash?"
Chris said, "hell no, this is hard enough as it is."
But a few minutes later he said, "hey, what do I care."

Bach in the dark with flashes going off.

Jaw dropping.

Unfortunately, the tapers didn't get him doing it at the Lime Kiln concert. I'll have to find another version of it.

I saw the MAS concert in Portland, Oregon and was just as amazed!!!!! Chris played a song off his new album called "your everything"....i think. BUt it was really good. I really like the style that Nickel Creek is open to. It's not just 'bluegrass' or 'celtic', it's a mix of everything.........i liked them before, but I am obsessed now:p

I just caught MAS this morning on A&E's BREAKFAST WITH THE ARTS and I'm bummed that I passed on seeing them in Portland. They did some tunes. Chris, Glen and John did an interview. John talked about the symposium. Chris mentioned his solo release of 10/13. Looks like I need to go out and pick up the CD (which was apparently recorded three years ago - in three days).

Gallamine: thanks for posting the instrumental cover of Going to California at the top of the thread -- what a great version! JPJ carries the tune pretty well, huh? (And it sounds so much better sans Robert Plant, IMO.)

Neither, it's going to be Nickel Creek with the n-member Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. :-) Though in all likelihood they will play some songs just by themsleves (with Mark Schatz on bass?) in addition. Should be interesting.

The MAS tour is over now.

Here's all the MAS concert recordings on Archive.org. The Lime Kiln one is exceptional quality.

I will say that following the A&E broadcast I was intrigued enough to go out and pick up the CD, which just doesn't do anything for me. What I saw them do on the broadcast was a lot more interesting than the recording. I bet the live shows were good - sorry I missed the one here.

I"m hoping someone can help me.... I downloaded the Flac file of the concert and I imported it into macflac trying to convert it into a wav file so I can place it into itunes. The first Mas concert worked fine but the one at lime kiln it keeps saying that there was an error in the decoding. Does anyone have any suggestions? HELP!!!!

Christine -

If you want the show in MP3 format, why not just download the _mp3.zip from archive.org??

Christine W
Aug-25-2004, 7:55am
Tim-n-VA,
I thought that too, but I was of the understanding that the Flac files have no loss of quality? This may not be right. Have you downloaded the mp3 files and do they sound good?

Jeff Hoelter

Christine,

#Yes, FLAC files are lossless (no loss of audio quality). #For some more OS X FLAC utilities that might help you, look here:

Thanks for your help everyone. I think I must have a corrupt file. I've downloaded this twice now, with no luck. I used Flacmac and it turned two of the songs into WAVs and the rest it gives me an error messege.

xAct should be able to tell you whether the FLAC files are corrupt or not. #The last resort is to use the command line version of FLAC and check it with that....let me know if you need some instructions to get that set up.

Jeff

The FLAC files are loss-less but if you convert them to MP3 yourself you have the same loss of quality that you'd have if you just download the MP3. #If you are going to keep them/play them from the FLAC format, it is worth having but I'd say not worth the hassle if you convert them to MP3. #The website has the MP3 at two different levels of quality. #I downloaded the MP3 for the Birchmere show that I attended and found the quality very good but I don't claim to have an extremely discerning ear.

Added note: I realize that I was confusing .wav with .mp3 but iTunes takes MP3s also.

Thanks Jeff,
I'll mess with it some more and if I can't get it. I may need some assistance. I may try downloading the mp3's too like Tim suggested.
Tim-n-Va,
Your logic makes sence to me. I'll give it a whirl.

The entire band played for about an hour after the concert.
The aftershow part is now also available from LMA:
